Congratulations to the Democrats!

But don't be too confident, as the evil Witch of teh West said in the "Wizard of Oz": "we'll get you my pretties [in two years]" ;)
Well I hope you are wrong, and in any case we know what happens to the Witch of the West, don't we?

A question from an "outsider": were democrats and republicans the only two parties whose runners you could vote for the congress/senate?
No, but for all practical purposes it might as well have been.

Besides the Dems and Reps, our ballot had an Independent, a Libertarian, and a Green (In the Senate Race)

I voted for the Libertarian. He came in third, with a little over 1% of the vote.

IMO a Democratic victory is an improvement over the current situation, but hardly worth a vigorous celebration.

Well, at least Nancy Pelosi and Osama Bin-Laden can be happy.

Start learning to speak Arabic, folks.
And hopefully a Democrat controlled Congress won't be as liable to cave in from scare tactics such as these from the Bush admin.

Well I practically never end up voting for any of the 3 major parties either, usually it's the Christian Democrats. Only in our last presidntal elections I voted for the candidate of the Social Democrats.

IMO a Democratic victory is an improvement over the current situation, but hardly worth a vigorous celebration.

That's exactly how I've perceived it, "from an outsiders view".

Well if it gets the troops out of Iraq and stops the warpath that we seem to be headed down, I'm in favour!

Pete

I don't think that'll happen. Realistically, the legislature is going to have little control over what happens in Iraq. If the president decides that he wants to keep all the troops there, then they're gonna stay. The only real thing they can do is refuse funding, and nobody is gonna do that. Other than that, they can try and exert political pressure, but I doubt that'll do much.

Ultimately I'm concerned what effects that'll have on the democrats in two years. They won in large part due to Iraq, if things keeping going over there as is, then they won't be in as good a position to use it and it might work against them.

Sadly, I agree with your prognosis!

But at least if GWB has to fight with the Senate and the House for funding and approval, the chances of him gaining support to attack another country are slim (I hope!), so perhaps the warpath is blocked even if we have to wait to end this current campaign!

I just hope they clean up congress. They need to end earmarks, kill K-street, investigate any and all corruption(dem or republican). If they can take the moral high ground on corruption they will have a good 10 year majority.

If they just run congress like the Republicans have they will be swept out in short order.

You know that comedians joke about people making statements like that, right? You know why they get the laughs? Because someone actually saying the things you just said sounds pretty ridiculous to a rational human being. Heck, just last night Colbert had a cake made with Osama's picture on it and the caption "Congratulations Terrorists!", and then followed it up by changing his show's subtitles to Arabic, telling the audience to expect a lot of that in the future. And this is from a guy who is pretending to be a conservative so over the top that it should be obvious he isn't serious. But then I hear the above statements, practically an imitation of his latest show.

That's why I love this forum. Colbert would be accused of being a godless left wing socialist if he posted here.

Hopefully there won't be another country that needs to be attacked! And if there is, hopefully our new Congress will still have the guts to do something about it.

I guess i'm indifferent to the whole thing. Things aren't going to change nearly as much as people hope in the next two years...and because of that, I have a feeling a Dem win yesterday is only going to reinvigerate the Republicans to take the White House again in '08.

This kind of ridiculous empty rhetoric is the precise reason why republicans have lost these elections.
