  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Just too far beyond them?

Computer programmers from the 60's and 70's couldn't see past the year 1999. :D

I doubt the mayans had any such notions when they chipped away at their stone walls. How do we know that the author of this article knows what he is talking about? It is a bit like how some folks read Nostrodamus and see Elvis and UFOs in it. People can see whatever they want in theses things.

I think the mayans just liked to draw pictures on walls...

Saying the Myan callander ends on 12-21-12 is a little misleading, that is just the end of the last cycle that the Myans bothered carving. It would be like saying that our callander ends on 10-31-05 because you can't find any that go past that date.

It has been a while, but I believe tha Myan callander was based on the apparent galactic "equanox" or when the milky way appears centered directly overhead at midnight. They found out this happens every thousand some-odd years and allong with a few other astronomical observations put together one of the best callenders ever made. It is more accurate than the one we currently use by far. In their religious practices they could use it not only to look forward but also back. They, just like some of us, placed a signifigance to the cycles when their callander rolled over.

And like our callander the end of the 2012 cycle will probably be about maybe even less exciting than 1999-2000 was. So don't get too hyped up on it people.

BTW, just from a Christian perspective, isn't it kinda a bad thing to go and start trying to fit another religions gods and ideals into Christianity.?

I have the proof that BOTH the scientists AND the Young Earth Creationist are plain wrong. The earth is not 4,5 billions years old, nor 6000 years.

In fact the whole world is only 39 years old, to be more exact, the world came into being on 16-th of march 1963.

This happens to be my birthday. All I see is illusions about a world that existed before, but that can't be true, cause I have not been there.

Not really, since many, many christian practices and traditions were stolen/adopted from other religions. Christmas and Easter come to mind.

Actually, the date is December 22, 2012. Interestingly enough, this wasn't the only culture to believe Dec 22/23 2012, was the end of the world. Others, including the Chinese and Egyptians, thought something terrible would happen then as well.

And most importantly they didn't believe that would be the end of the world. It was an epoch, the ending and beginning of a cycle. It would be marketed by man's abuse of nature coming back to him, in the forum of his technology, made from "Earth" destroying them.

It could be. But there is no reason to believe that the age we are living in right now will not last a full 2000 years. We began at pentacost soon after Jesus went up to Heaven. So this age should end around 2030.

Of course there is always room for error in our calender. Or something we don't know about that would cause this age to be shortened.

As far as what is going to take place in the universe in 2012. Things like that do not all of a sudden just happen. They would have had a slow gradual influence on us over time.

If I had to guess at something, I would say in the year 2012 science and technology will reach it's peek, and we will start to see  a decline rather than a increase in knowledge at that point.

But it is just a wild guess. The greek calender that we are using today is not a very good one. It gets the job done, sort of. But there were other civilizations that came up with a much better calander then the greeks did. It is just that they were peaceful civilizations and did not have the driving urge to rule, reign and to control the world as the Greeks & Roman did.

According to the artical, there is some sort of 2500 year cycle in the universe. In 2012 is the end and also the beginning of the cycle.

Was it Arthur Clark who was facinated with the idea that you can not have a end without a beginning and a beginning without a end?

To say it's going to be the end of the world or going to be the day jesus comes back or something is way out of line since you have no idea.

IMO they just did what we did in the 60's we made computers so they couldn't get past 1999 so it isn't a big dead.

Or who knows it could be like on X-files there could be an alien invasion or there could be an asteroid and comet could hit the earth so to say that you think it's the time jesus will come back is crazy.

The idea that the world is going to end is a mis understanding of the Greek text. The meaning is the end of the age. It is more of a history term.

What the Bible is talking about is not really an end but something very much like what took place 64 million years ago (science date) where 2/3 of the life was destroyed and the whole face of the earth burst into flames as a result of a "doomsday astroid".
