Ok so we have here as the first models saying that the universe was dynamical and the matter would contract. Then we have Einstein trying to solve a STATIC universe solution. It wasn't until 1922 that Friedman sayed the universe MIGHT expand. Ok so basically people or SCIENTISTS thought that the universe was either contracting or staying static. This is in the 1900s, my friend.
