how long does everyone keep their vehicles?

we have a 2011 Subaru Forester with only 60,000 miles
keeping it for a while

In the past, I have had to keep my vehicles until they are too expensive and unreliable for me to keep.

Lately it is around 10-15 years old, except for the ones I was driving in the 80s and 90s that may have been only 8 years old by the time they departed. Right now, I am driving a 2005 Pontiac Vibe, that has 178+ K on it, and will likely ditch it when I move back to California and start driving my folks' newer cars, will probably give it to my best friend who wants it.

I have a 2009 Kia sorento with about 37k on it. I have had to change out the battery and the timing belt, and replace a light bulb...
The biggest problem is that the driver's seat does not adjust up or down, ( just back and forth) and the plug for the phone has the wrong jack, so I can't charge my cell phone.:sigh:

My previous car was a '09 KIA sportage which I totaled in Jun '21. 100K+ miles. Until I was TG-boned by a pick up neverf had any major problems with it. I am probably driving my last car now. A '21 KIA Sorento. My picture to the left was taken when FDR was president. I look like this now.

My current vehicles are both 2016 models (Nissan Frontier & Volvo S60) bought new that now have about 60K & 80K miles on them respectively. Previously our cars were bought in 2001 (Toyota RAV4) & 2002 (Toyota Camry), but we kept them both for over 200K miles before selling them. I had an 2011 Audi A3 TDI in between, but I only sold it back to Audi because I got an amazing deal due to the Volkswagen TDI diesel-gate scandal.

If it takes you 4 or 5 years to pay off a car, it stands to reason that if you save up the same amount for 4 or 5 years more, you will have enough to buy your future cars new and with cash. So keep your cars as long as you can stand them, and you can afford to buy your next ones with cash.

An alternative strategy is to buy your vehicles about 2 years old, and hold them for about 7 years. You miss the biggest part of the depreciation, and unload it before the biggest part of the maintenance costs.

If you're starting out and have few resources, buy a 10+ year old car for cheap, but make sure you are still saving monthly for maintenance bills, because even if you luck out and don't need it, you can still use it to save for your next car. (At that price sometimes a parking lot fender bender can total a car, because even though it still runs fine, it might be cheaper to buy another identical car than fix it.)

Been driving subarus since about 1983. They can last and last and last. I had one 17 years and we only sold it just because the wife couldn't drive her manual clutch subaru due to calf muscles injury so I got that one and she got a new one. The old one would have continued on who knows how long. The current one I have is an 2005 with 165K or so, and it runs like a top, starts instantly, etc. Very little work of any kind ever done on it past maintenance like oil changes and some new axel boots, and one or 2 recall things like free new wheel bearings or such. heh, I guess we've had this one I'm driving now 17 years also, just like the old one, but I don't see it going away anytime soon.

I usually buy used automobiles and typically keep them 6-8 years. I hate car payments. Anyway I currently drive an '06 Tacoma I bought in '17 and it's still going strong. \o/!

So obviously we keep them quite a while and pay cash when we replace. No plan on replacing any of these until the car market settles back out, which is likely 2025 or so to alleviate all the pent up demand caused by chip shortages.

I would suggest keeping your car till the wheels fall off that way you will get your money's worth from it. Look after it and you will get three times that mileage from it.

plan on keeping it so when my teen starts driving in a couple years, she can use it

I keep 2 and as long as repairs are under $2-3,000 I'll keep them forever ... unless it's a 4wd truck .... then I'd be willing to invest more into it.

Subarus are usually most dependable for a very long time. Friend of mine has one that has over 300,000 miles and still running strong.

When we went to get my wife's new subaru years ago, the dealer guy told us a story that one had gotten over 500,000 being driven in a gentle way in West Texas on long highway drives between bank branches, which is plausible, as Texas has good highways and also no salt on the roads, and not having much stop and go is gentle on a car.

Generally speaking, most cars last 10-12 years. Keep in mind how far you drive your car around on a daily basis and how well you keep your vehicle maintained can either lengthen or lower that amount of time.

I would suggest getting ready to get a new vehicle once yours has hit roughly 200,000 miles, by that time, most cars start having heavy (and expensive) maintenance issues that might not be worth repairing.

May God bless you!

In that case, your vehicle probably has quite a few more years left to go, 10-12 years is if you drive the car on a regular basis. Just make sure it gets looked at every few months to prevent anything from going wrong.
