I have most generally purchased new cars and drove them until nearly the end of their useful life. When repairs exceed the value of the vehicle, I'm usually done. Years ago I read an article in Consumer Reports that if you purchase new vehicles, you need to drive them 10 years.

The length of ownership has increased greatly over the years as motors and body integrity became more reliable. When I started buying cars one would feel lucky to get 100,000 miles out of a vehicle, that is if the body hadn't already rusted out which often began within 3 years of new purchase. Today, I own an '06 and an '09 going on 200,000 mi. with no rust.

most vehicles don't rust out anymore
not a speck of rust on my 2011 vehicle

however, my very first vehicle was a used Ford
picked up a friend & when she got in on front passenger side, her foot went right through the floor!

it had rusted right through the floor

how long does everyone keep their vehicles?

we have a 2011 Subaru Forester with only 60,000 miles
keeping it for a while

As long as they last. I can't afford to buy new all the time...heck I always buy used when I do get a new one

You could have asked her to use her feet for extra braking power...no power assisted braking in those days!

I just traded in a 2013 VW that had been serving me quite well, but it was difficult to get in and out of, being low to the ground (and me, um... experiencing "my age"). Still, I would've kept it but it developed a problem that would have cost more to fix than it was worth so... new 2022 VW SUV that I hope I can keep now "for the rest of my life" (barring any ridiculous leftist green garbage regulations :( )
