Yep... Some of the podcasts I listen to have recently been circling around the notion that contemporary American evangelicalism tends to foster an affinity for narcissists. Part of this is the movement's history of glorifying celebrity culture (in the context of celebrity pastors), part of it is the sermon-centric structure of Sunday church services, part of it is our individualism and lack of denominational oversight over individual churches, and part of it is the incentives towards rapid numerical growth.
As such, it shouldn't be too surprising that a group of folks who are used to sitting in a chair and having a single, overly-confident, virtually-unaccountable voice tell them how to think and act every week were accepting of the same sort of thing coming from a politician.
OTOH, while there are certainly plenty of narcissists on the left, I'm struggling to think of any institutions on the left that overtly conditions folks to excuse that behavior and elevate those narcissists to positions of power and authority.
