• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Has there actually been a case where someone has complained about crosses on the side of the road?

That is really over the line.
Oh yes - the reason for the editorial cartoon is the current lawsuit in Utah.

Why should my tax dollars go to pay for Christian crosses? Would you want your tax dollars to pay for shrines to Apollo? Government shouldn't be in the business of religion or religious symbiology.

Note the Billboard in the OP. Atheists paid for their sign. They didn't ask taxpayers to do it for them. Christians should do the same.

My question is: what if the person who died was Jewish? or Muslim? or Hindu? or an atheist?

If they're going to erect a monument of that sort, couldn't they do it at least according to the person's faith (or lack thereof)?

(The symbol I most like for non-theists on CF is the atom. I've never quite understood why atheists are represented by icons of a gray human head wearing a black helmet.)

Errm, its supposed to be a brain :)

Unless its indicative of the EAC, and all the black and stealthy things (wearing black helmets) we do.

I always thought it was a grey head with a black brain inside.

I heard BOR talking with an opponent of the roadside crosses, and the opponent was more concerned with the crosses placed on public lands. The guy's case just seemed so weak frivolous, that I had to disagree. Family members mourn their departed loved ones, where is the harm putting a cross on the side of the road? I see them all over in my part of the country,

To be honest I don't see the problem either.

Putting them there is not the problem. Paying for them with taxpayer money is.

I never saw an article for this thread. Is that the issue? Taxpayer money paid for crosses in Arlington Cemetery, is that different?

We can pay for needles for herion addicts, but not a cross?

Rivers said the purpose of the suit is to eliminate religious symbols used by government agencies and placed on government land. American Atheists claim to have a membership of 30 million people. They are not opposed to memorials, just the crosses.
