  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Here are a couple of tips that may make things easier for a beginning crocheter--

Use a large hook. When I learned the standard was to use a G or an H. Bump up to an I with worsted weight yarn.

Use a light colored yarn to start. It is easier to see the stitches.

Work the foundation or beginning chain with a hook one size larger than the pattern calls for. Use the smaller specified hook for the rest of the pattern.

If you get frustrated, put it away for awhile and do something else.

Stay relaxed and work loose. Once you get the hang of the mechanics of making the stitches you can work on firming up your gauge.

Above all, remember this is a hobby, not brain surgery! No one (other than you) is going to care if you mess up from time to time.

(I have used these tips when I teach 3rd - 5th graders to crochet. Telling them to "Lighten up - this is supposed to be fun" works wonders.

I've been crocheting since I was five and plan to have a lot of fun with it this summer. No idea what I will make of course. What is everyone here doing? If this has already been discussed, sorry about that. I didn't bother to look at all of the last 20 pages.

I'm crocheting dishcloths and soap savers at the moment. nd this morning I just picked up a new hook to get started on a poncho for my daughter.

Ann, I came across some old crochet magazines from the 70's at a thrift store. they have patterns for ponchos, capes, etc. which are now back in style. I haven't gotten around to making anything yet but there are some really interesting patterns in them.

Good luck with your project!

I have a baby blanket started as well as a doily. Will be starting another blanket (58 x 74) soon, since I need it for a wedding gift next month. I also have thread for 2 doilies to work on this summer when it gets hot.

That's what I like to do. Blankets in the winter and doilies/little things in the summer. I was finishing an afghan in June once... Ended up spreading the finished part on the table to get it off my lap.

Hello,
I've not quite honed crocheting but I am knitting at this point, although, one of my cousins gave me a pattern to crochet the straps on flip flop sandals. A friend of hers did a pair for her and they're so cute and she wants me to figure it out!!
Has anyone seen this before?

I have no idea how to do flip flops, sorry.

I do a lot of crocheting. I wish I had time to do it consistently, but mostly I do doileys lately. I create the patterns myself.
I wish I could do it all the time as well, but school stops me from doing that. = P
You make your own patterns? cool. I've kinda started to come up with my own pattern for purses and what not, myself.

At http://www.lionbrand.com/ under the free crochet patterns/accessories there is a pattern using funfur. And Annie's Attic has a leaflet with a variety of motifs worked onto the flipflops.
