  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I taught myself from a book, the best part being that I now figure if I can read a pattern I can make it.

My grandmother on Dad's side was a wonderful crocheter, working mainly in thread. Unfortunately she died when I was a baby, so I never knew her. A few years ago I made a bunch of Christmas presents for the family and included some thread work. My Dad's comment--your grandmother would be proud of you. This past Christmas I made lots of doilies as gifts and everyone loved them. At some point my Dad took my oldest sister aside and after a brief conversation she disappeared for a moment. When she came back she handed me an old eyeglass case and said "Dad and I think you should have these". It was filled with Grandma's hooks!! What a treasure. One of them is actually bent from use--right where her finger would have rested. I'm thinking of asking my sister if she has a picture of Grandma (sis is family historian) and displaying the hooks and picture in a shadowbox. If I can find a deep enough one I could also put in the doll she made the clothes for.

I never met my grandma but she crocheted baby blanket for my mum to keep. Now my cousins wife is pregnant and my oldest aunty is knitting a baby blanket for it because she never payed attention when grandma tried to teach her. Our whole family was sitting around a table at my aunties house and she said that it made her almost cry because she feels that it is a dying art. It made me sad too :(

Too bad your aunt couldn't see the 9 young ladies my daughter and I taught the basics of crochet to a few months ago. They were having a blast figuring out what kinds of things they could make and who they could give things to. Most of them had already made and given simple bookmarks or bracelets to friends and parents by the 3rd of 4 classes. One girl even made a small purse for her little sister.
My girlfriend's college aged daughter crochets as do many of her dorm mates. They use crocheting and knitting as a way to unwind after tests, and most of them learned after getting to college.
So I don't think crochet is dying too quickly.

It's been a long time since I crocheted ... but once I was an avid crocheter. Wish I could find the time to get back into it. ^_^
I hope you can find time to get back into it too.

I learnt to crochet when I was about 10. We had to crochetand edge around a washer at school. I then taught myself the granny square, and not long after that I was making wedding horseshoes, bells and christmas ornaments. Doileys soon followed, and I've been doing it on and off for years now.

I've just started crocheting dishcloths. Something I hadn't come across in Australia before, so this shall be different.

For those of you who were looking for help learning, I did come across this site today.
