  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The problem is in your foundation row you are not making enough corners. Instead of making four you are making three, which makes a trangle. Before you start your second row count how many open spaces (corners) to make sure you have four, if you only have three go back and make another. If you could post a picture that would confirm that this is indeed the problem.
I was thinking this too, but didn't know how to describe it - being a novice crocheter.

This definitely sounds right. I just couldn't picture in my mind what was wrong.

Yay for approaching 1000 posts on this thread!

 These last few posts reminded me of something I've been meaning to ask:

Is it just me, or do other people get put off by the term "granny squares"? I didn't know what they were called until I recently renewed my childhood interest in crocheting. I know crocheting and knitting's making a comeback, but I wonder if crocheting would be more popular if the basic shape wasn't called a "granny square"? What do you all think? Just out of curiosity :)

It doesn't really bother me at all. As well, it shows how little people know about crocheting, if they think granny squares are the only thing you can make. There are so many other possiblities.

Yea, I use to have this problem myself was I was a child and learning to make granny squares. I quickly learned what the problem was and fixed it.

You're right about that, about people generally knowing little about crocheting. Knitting has so long dominated over crocheting. I was so excited to learn recently that there's heaps you can do with a crochet hook. I thought I was doomed to granny squares. I find just going in straight lines, turning over, and continuing very therapeutic.

Have you looked at BarbaJean's crochet thread? She had some good examples there of what you can do with crocheting.

Granny squares: do you know how many beautiful things you can make with the lowly granny square? Beautiful throws, hats, sweater wests, skirts, curtains, tablecloths and there's tons more. With the new and improved granny squares they don't even look like they used to, and so easy to make, I love them

 at everyone.

Yep, I have to agree with you on this one.

I had a period of time where I wasn't sleeping good at night and so I started to make a baby blanket.

But just going along in straight lines has worked wonders these past few months. It's very relaxing to the point that I've very nearly contemplated taking it with me when I go out and I know that I'll be bored whilst out.

I can't wait for it to be finished so that I can post it here. :D

These are pictures of the blanket I made with homespun yarn color is called waterfall. It turned out very nice and very soft. This is also the blanket I had half done and found out the dye lots did not match, so had to tear out and start again. Hope you enjoy sorry it is knitted but next one will be crocheted

The light color is part of the pattern of coloring going across the yarn. I couldn't find any way to lay it so you could really see the color pattern. Plus the room lighting wasn't good

Yes, granny squares are amazing for making different things. You can make almost anything out of them by sewing them together.

Hi everyone

Been awhile since I've dropped by. I have been busy! In the past month I have made 3 prayer shawls and 2 baby blankets! I am working on another baby blanket now -- the second of a set for twins, same pattern, different yarn print.

After the blankets are done I am going to try my hand at some Crinoline Ladies. A friend gave me a shadowbox with a hinged front and I thought the ladies would look nice displayed in it on a rotating basis. I'm hoping to start with one for Easter.

Hello! Good to see you again. What are crinoline ladies?

I finished my daisy afghan/baby blanket. I've now started an afghan called Elegant Clusters. I've posted pics in my Crochet Blog if you'd like to see. http://barbarajean1987.blogspot.com/

Crinoline Ladies (also called Southern Belles) are seen in crochet and embroidery work. They are figures of ladies in fancy dresses and big hats, usually seen from the back or in partial profile. When worked in thread crochet they are often seen as inserts on pillow case edging or as doilies.

You can see some here: http://www.crochetmemories.com/patterns/dollmenu2.php

(these are the patterns I recently purchased and can barely wait to start!)

I'm almost ready to start on my second Crinoline Lady -- She will have a yellow gown, but instead of bows I am going to use craft gems in emerald (May's birthstone).

I have been working on a blue basketweave baby blanket for what seems ages! Why does this stitch seem to take soooo long??? Anyway, I got bored with it so I spent 2 days making shoppingbags from leftover cottons and postal twine. I have 3 that will live in the van for those spur of the moment stops at the farmer's market or flea market.

I have all the stuff to do Grandma's shadowbox. I just need to make a holder for her hooks and put everything together. The Babydoll outfit she made 50+ years ago washed up great! I need to find a spot to hang the box when it is done so people can enjoy it. My Grandma was well known in our hometown for her crocheting, esp. in thread, and I feel honored to be the custodian of her hooks and a couple pieces of her work (one of the hooks is bent from use--must have been her fav!).
