  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I have been trying to self teach crochet. I have bought MANY products and a computer program, tons of books, hooks na dyarn, and still NOTHING. Well I did make a small pocket book for a sister of mine, but nothing like I really wan to do. I wan to make an afgan. My hubby had them growing up living with his grandmom and none got passed to him when she passed, they went to others who really had nothing to do with her. Since we have been together I have tried learning to make him one of his own, and I cna't..But I am still trying!

I hope you keep trying with the crochet. Once you get the mechanics of making the stitches down, all it takes is practice. And remember to pick simple patterns to begin with -- a rectangle (40 X 60) done in single or double crochets can make a lovely blanket, especially if you do it in stripes or a varigated yarn. If you need any help, just ask!

What is it about granny squares that you have trouble with? Is that where you have trouble with the measuring? I can make two suggestions about that. One is if your squares are uniform in size, don't worry about the measurement. Your afghan will just measure a little differently than the pattern finished size indicates. Now, if your measurement is really different than the specified finished size or you are making something like a vest from the squares then you will need to work to get the finished square size correct. If you are having trouble with tension in making the squares and you are making squares that are uniform in size then it would be a good idea to try a different size hook. Square too big, smaller hook-- too small try a bigger hook!

I have really been wanting to learn how to crchet or knit, as a way to destress. I have a few hobbies like painting and gardening but want something i can do sitting on my butt in the living room with the family :) But i can NOT learn without seeing something done....slight learning disability if you will....can not understand something without seeing it. Not a verbal learner, or reading, same difference....anyway, is there a great site that anyone knows of with tons of pictures?? and very very explanatory, practically childlike?? i dont know anyone who does it, so cant rely on family and friends and dont want to pay for lessons......a great book would be a help too, as long as it is, like i said, knitting for dummies lol

 I am not too sure of what sites would be best but I so a searchon an engine like google or ask and come up with alot of sites. Also I got a starter kit from Walmart called teach your self to crochet the also had knitting there. Comes with a detailed book and some things to get you started if that might help. Good luck!

Okay, I'm a male, yet, I have found that hobbies favored by women are some of the coolest and rewarding hobbies around. My grandma taught me how to crochet when I was 8 or 9 (though I forgot completely all but the chain stitch), and I made a few rather curled butterfly magnets. I have done latch hook rug (yes one), I even got into cross stitching for a year or so. Recently I have been looking for a new hobbie, one that is fun and rewarding, and I just thought, 'hey I don't have any sweaters, or winter hat or gloves or many blankets, shoot why not relearn crochet and make some?' Problem is, most patterns I have found make NO sense to me, not to mention that fact that it's a very female dominated craft, and it's all womens sweaters, not men's. I am also a visual learner, need to see it to learn it, I mean how am I supposed to ch2 to dc3 st of 4or plg on crts round 2? Qual est la fecha de hois?

This was my very first post to CF, though I have lurked on and off for a year now. Kind of an odd place to start my post, but hey, I have no shame.

Stitchguide.com is a good place to learn and there are some how to videos available.

As for some nice guy sweater patterns check out "For the Boyz" by Jenny King at JennyKingDesigns.com. Jenny is from Australia and some of the sweaters in the book are inspired by the surfer sweaters her sons like.

Another choice is Melissa Leapman's "Season's of Love" from Leisure Arts. There is an Aran pattern and a Houndstooth that my husband wants me to make for him.

hi, my grandma taught me to crochet when I was little and ive been doing it eversince, but now and again I need to relearn somestuff and for those of you who said they had trouble finding an easy instruction guide... check out those little pattern books in walmart (k-mart or anything simlar) they usually have both books for experienced ppl and for kids and learners. they are very helpful and have pictures and only cost a buck or two.

Stitchguide.com is an excellent site, I have even started doing the Pineapple Afgan mentioned in one of the guides. I am using an I crochet and crochet-knit needle (came in a kit, didn't see the H one around), and I'm about 14 rows into my first block. All the diagrams are excellent, however I just don't get it. What the diagram shows and what I see before me are nothing alike. My biggest blooper is ending the picking up of the loops just before I start to work off the loops. I just put the hook under whatever bar I can find and call it good (and hope it works itself out when I go to join all the blocks).

I hope it turns out, 30 blocks of doing it wrong could turn to be ugly... :p Maybe I should ask my grandma to give me some pointers. It would give me a good reason to go visit her more often.

I want to make an afgan for my hubby. Centimental reasons that it has to be the granny square, but I am having a darned time. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. I want to try to accomplish this by July the 11th anniversay of his grandmothers death. Please help if you can! THanks! :help:

 Hi, I am new to this board. I think it's great that this board is Christian based!! I have been crocheting since the 80's and recently picked up Knitting again. I've noticed there are alot of new crocheters and knitters. There are several good videos that you can pick up at the library. Knitting from start to finish by Bev Dillon is a great one for knitting and there are several other ones that teach granny squares etc. Also try some childrens books, believe it or not that,s a good way to learn. Joann fabrics, when you sign upfor their mailing lists place 50% off coupons off any regular priced items. Go to the book section and you can get quite a deal. There are alot of good beginner books out there . Get them cheaper by buying from online bookstores such as Abebooks, Alibris,Amazon books etc. They give you the options of buying them used or new.
