  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Creationism Losing Ground in Education

In 2019 the National Centre for Science Education (NCSE) commissioned a survey of US public high school biology teachers. The survey duplicated a similar survey conducted in 2007 and was designed to assess shifts in the teaching of evolution, in US public schools, in the intervening 12 years.

As part of both surveys participant teachers were assigned to four categories based on responses to a number of questions, on attitudes to evolution/creationism. These questions were taken from standard Gallup surveys.

The categories were (bolded titles are my shorthand way of identifying each group):

  • ‘Evolutionists’ - Those who emphasised to their students that evolution is established, fact- based science and did not include pro-creation messages in their teaching
  • ‘Creationists’ - Exclusively pro-creationist teachers who agreed that they emphasized creationism as a “valid scientific alternative” to their students
  • ‘Avoiders’ - Those who avoided endorsing evolution or creationism
  • ‘Mixers’ - Those who endorsed both evolution and creationism

In 2007 ‘Evolutionists’ were 51% of the group. By 2019 this had increased to 67%.

Most of this increase came from a reduction in the ‘Mixer’ category from 23% down to 12 %

‘Avoiders’ decreased from 18% to 15% while ‘Creationists’ fell from 8.6% to 5.6%.
upload_2020-9-29_16-56-27.png

The survey also looked at time devoted to teaching evolution. In 2007, the average number of hours devoted to teaching evolution was 9.8 hours, with human evolution in particular receiving 4.1 hours. In 2019, the average number of hours devoted to teaching evolution was up to 12.4 hours, a rise of 25 percent, with human evolution in particular receiving 7.7 hours, a rise of 90 percent.

Part of the explanation for the shift involves the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), the model set of state science education standards introduced in 2013, and adopted in twenty states so far. Evolution features prominently in the NGSS, which include “Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity” as a core idea of the life sciences. A number of other states have adopted standards based on the NGSS.

Without going to debate how can you educate anyone on creation ?

There is gazillion versions of creation myths and zero evidence for any of them.

Creation class for year 2020. Length 5 seconds. God did it(spoken slowly)

Next class.

That is not education.

Evolution is a Satanic plot?
Charles Darwin was personally tutored by Satan?
Every evolution teacher has been assigned 5 angels?
Where did you find this stuff? It looks like it time travelled from 1973.

It's way easier to believe this stuff than to invest time into studying the bible and its origins. People like easy.

Easier to believe and understand evidence encompassing multiple fields of scientific research than just shrug and say it was a miracle so of course there is no evidence ?

Sounds legit.

Explain the Resurrection

There's a critical difference here.

Apart from the Bible there is no evidence that the resurrection actually occurred. However, there is also no specific evidence (that I know of) that the resurrection did not occur.

Contrast this with creationism

Apart from the Bible there is no evidence that Genesis is literally true. However, there is evidence, across multiple fields of science, which shows that Genesis cannot be literally true.

You're the one making the connections. I asked a question out of context. But nonetheless... Explain the resurrection

I had absolutely no idea that a country that could land a man on the moon, invent the smart phone etc could be so backward until I started visiting this site.

Wait until you see what America says about the genders of children. Bunch of science deniers!

This thread is not about the resurrection. The Thread topic is about the teaching of evolution.

If you have an issue about the resurrection please start your own thread.

In the Trump era being uneducated and believing in astral sex with demons instead of vaccines has somehow become a badge of honor.

As if it somehow means you are closer to truth instead of being just ..... well....uneducated.

Add to that a bit of isolationism and sheer ignorance of world events and history, religious fervor mostly stemming from demographics of eroding number of religious white middle class, demagogue President hammering press and US institutions with touch of patriotism and you have a mess.

Returning to the moon landing we have the message Kennedy had.

And we have the message Trump has. Don’t trust experts, don’t trust science. Trust me. Believe me.

For reasons discussed above some actually do. Sad state of affairs all around.

When people are struggling to get by, they are more than happy to listen when someone like Trump comes along and points the finger at everyone but the real guilty parties. It seems like he was waiting for his moment and picked it just right, he seems to have an instinct for knowing when it’s time to jump in and spin whatever conspiracies are popular at the time.

‘Creationists’ - Exclusively pro-creationist teachers who agreed that they emphasized creationism as a “valid scientific alternative” to their students.
This is what jumped out at me like a frog off a lily pad.

Why would members of academia agree that creationism is a "valid scientific alternative"?

Creationism is about as scientific as that Florida footbridge was useful.

Of course, it is the National Center for Science Education, so what do you expect?

You won't see them using creationists who believe as I do, that creationism isn't scientific.

No, you'll see them use creationists who believe creationism is scientific.

I used to think educated people couldn't tell the difference between science and miracles; but anymore, I'm beginning to realize that academia is good at spotting people who can push their Antichristian agendas.

I vote we defund this Nut Case for Sorry Education outfit.

Creation class for year 2020. Length 5 seconds. God did it(spoken slowly).
I'll give you 5 hours for this one:

Creationism test:

1. Explain the difference between creatio ex nihilo and creatio ex materia; and give two examples of each.
2. Explain the difference between "God" and "LORD God".
3. Eden in the Bible is known as __________ on a secular map.
4. What literary device reconciles Genesis 1 and Genesis 2?
5. Put the following in order that they appeared in the universe: whales, stars, trees, sun, land, sea, outer space.
6. What day was Adam created on?
7. Was the universe created a closed system and, if not, what kind of energy did it run off of? if it was created open, what closed it?
8. Describe terra aqua and what kind of water it consisted of and why.
9. Photosynthesis required light from the sun prior to the Fall. true or false?
10. Explain how a 24-hour day could transpire before the sun was created.
11. Explain the difference between "miracles" and "magic."
12. When discussing Creationism, why should one never let himself stray from Genesis 1 or 2?
13. Why is "heaven" singular in Genesis 1, but plural in Genesis 2?
