• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was a Cradle, but I fell away. I am working my way back Home, so maybe I will end up being both
Me too.
I guess we never really leave... but we don't sense the importance til one day.

Revert - i guess.

But I am cradle.

Interesting pattern here. There are more converts posting on this thread than cradle Catholics, and some of those are reverts. So the "pure" cradle Catholics are the minority. Not to change the topic, but I have often thought that converts (and reverts too) are more likely to be involved in their faith, whereas many cradle Catholics sort of take it for granted. They are Catholic by baptism and early education but don't get into their faith very deeply as adults. I call them sacrament Catholics. The indication here that converts and reverts may be the majority of Catholics active on this forum supports that idea. NOTE that this thread is not any kind of valid survey but the posts so far are illuminating.

yeah my dad is one of two people from his extended family who still practice the faith

I think only about 1/4 of Catholics attend mass every Sunday in the USA
so it seems like most Catholics could be described as "nominal Catholics"
I do not want to get this thread off topic or anything
but you do make a lot of interesting points Martin

interestingly enough in my parish there is a strong program for the kids and the teens, but the RCIA program struggles. also interesting is that the leaders for all three programs are cradle Catholics.

Cradle, but I think converts have more fun.

I get the feeling it means more to them, and in turn, that absolute JOY that spills out of them floods us with joy, and it's awesome!

My Grandmother was the best woman I ever knew. She was the one English branch of the family who were not born Catholic. She converted later in life. After our mother died and my father was working in the mines she was the main person raising us. She told me take everything good about being born Catholic then take everything good about choosing it for yourself by converting back to it every morning when you pray.

Choose every day to allow yourself to fall in love with the Eucharist again.

I think that this may result from the fact that a convert has made a conscious decision to seek the faith. As a child we just accept what we are being taught and it becomes part of us more easily.

My return to faith has been a conscious decision, and some days it is a hard road

That's the way I see it as well.

There's one thing to be said about reverting back...
tho i went to no church whatsoever for 7 years.
Going back is grace led. Jesus said those who have much to forgive are more thankful.
So that's one plus to finally opening up to grace.
