  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I always crack my back and neck. I feel like i have too, otherwise i get too tiff and feel funny.

Is there any risks in cracking your back and neck? and what's that cracking sound coming from anyway?

I don't know if it is good? I discourage my daughter form cracking her knuckles. As far as I know, I am not sure, the sound is the air escaping from the joint.

Nothing wrong with cracking your knuckles. As for your back, depending on your health, it can create problems. I know for me with my back pain, it helps ease the pain.

I didn't really ask about cracking knuckles, because i already know that overtime, your hands can become deformed.

Don't do it! lols.. i've seen proof!

Hmm, yeah, I do the same thing, lol.

I used to be bad for cracking my knuckles... and one day I looked at them and they seemed bigger. SO, I made myself stop--it worried me! And then I discovered after a while that my rings fit better!! Once in a while I find myself cracking one or two... but yeah, no more big knuckles for me! :)

As for the back... *shrugs* But I roll my wrists... same sound... I roll my ankles... same sound... both of which no matter how long I do it for, it cracks each and every time. HMMM! LOL

I don't think that there is anything wrong with cracking you back/neck. In fact it can be good for you, reliving stiffness and pain.Cracking your knuckles will NOT cause artheritis, this is a myth. However it can cause a bit of swelling.Although the cause of the popping sound is not entierly known, a common hypothisis is that the capsule between your joints is filled with synovial fluid which keeps everything lubercated. There are both nutirents and gases within the fluid and when you bend you fingers the capsuls have to make more room for the stretch so they release some of the gases. thus the popping sound. You cannot pop you knuckles again until the gases are reabsorbed into the capsul

Interesting information.

In that case, the gases in my knucles are quickly reabsorbed. Because, every couple of mintues i find that my knucles have to be cracked again.

I believe that developing arthirits in the hands due to cracking the knuckles is a myth. But, i do know that swelling and crooked hands will be the result in the end, overtime.

I'm trying not to crack my knuckles, i've been doing it for years! And yes, i have experienced some swelling in the hands but it's not that noticable. Thank God! i wan't to stop cracking them so my hands don't become deformed overtime and look ugly. However, i find it really hard not to crack them. It's such a overdone habbit of mine. Even when i'm not trying to crack them, i end up doing it accidently, one way or another.

What should i do?
(Don't tell me to tape my hands togeather, lol.. i've already have recieved such advice.)

I would ask a chiropractor, such a Dr. would certainly be qualified above those of us on this thread. J

I can't think of anything that would halp you stop, but I do know that it takes 21 days to break a habit.
And yes the gasses can be reabsorbed quite quickly.
There are also different kinds of cracking, like when your knees are elbow pops that most likely involves ligaments...

21 days to break a habbit? Okay, so i'm striving for that record now. I've made it to 3 hours the most without cracking them.

hmmm, I used to have really bad neck and back pain. So I went to a physical therepist and he would crack my neck and back, so I think it relieves stress and stiffness. My neck and back will still crack if i'm sitting too long or I go and reach for something up high. I told my physical therepist and an orthopedic dr. I was seeing and both said it was no cause for concern.

Tsarina,

If you're talking about your neck and back, see a doctor for your info, not an internet forum. You can get plenty of opinions and "trust me I know because I totally crack MY neck!!!" type advice here, but the overwhelming majority of us aren't qualified to make these statements.

Here's a little reading though: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cracking_knuckles

i have been to a physical therapist, and i have been to a chiropractor... they both have popped my back and neck...

That's what i hear as well. However, i'm starting to think.. if these doctors crack them in a "safe" way. I wonder if there is a harmful way of cracking your back.

I snap, crackle, and pop like an old lady..Not sure if its beneficial in the long run, but sure feels good at the time...lol

Same here. Sometimes i feel like i have an 80 year olds bones. My hip, knees, ankles, knuckles, back and neck need to popped. Otherwise, they become stiff and it's hard to move them.
