New dashboard highlights COVID-19 disparities by race, ethnicity

"Data shows that Black and Hispanic/Latinx populations are over-represented among COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths compared to White Wisconsinites. Hispanic or Latinx Wisconsinites have roughly 2.4 times greater case rates, while Black Wisconsinites have more than three times greater hospitalization rates, and over double the death rate.

Health officials say the disparities could be caused by systemic racism, and socioeconomic differences across communities."
-------

There you have it, folks! If blacks didn't get treated as often for getting Covid as whites do, it's called systematic racism. But now we see that they're getting 3 times as much treatment, that is also called systematic racism.
What's the solution? Should we treat less of them in hospitals so they won't be "over-represented"???

They always are. That's what makes it so funny.
Yeah so funny that minority populations are suffering in greater numbers from this disease the president thinks “affects virtually nobody” and has been trying tirelessly to downplay the threat the entire year.

I had a feeling you'd be here to try derailing the topic (as you usually do).
How about getting back to why it's considered to be systematic racism when black people don't get the as much treatment as white people do, and it's also considered systematic racism when they get treatment in 3 times the numbers when more of them get sick?

Using blacks' increased rates of hospitalization (and therefore increased treatment) as just another excuse to accuse white people of systematic racism is the biggest source there is for a good laugh.
Oh wait! I take that back! Watching people try to defend the accusations of racism on the basis of black people getting increased healthcare is an even better source for a good laugh! ^_^

This is one of your dumber attempts at trolling. Do you not feel silly writing stuff like this? I'd be embarrassed to do so.

what is really funny is watching someone ignore the fact that early detection and treatment of Covid reduces the risk of hospitalization by as much as 80%. and that early detection and treatment depends on medical insurance and that minorities are significantly less likely to have medical insurance...but somehow that isn't due to racial issues....

Trying to get people to stay on topic rather than derailing it isn't trolling. However, what you wrote is.

What's to stay on topic? Your OP is facile and obviously designed to get a rise out of people rather than have a thoughtful, substantive discussion. If you want to whine about people derailing a thread, start a thread that's worth discussing. Don't vomit out a bunch of simple-minded garbage and then complain that people don't take you seriously.

K

In your OP, you failed to consider the obvious (to me, anyways) possibility that minorities are suffering severe consequences of the disease at disproportionate rates. If you look at the dashboard, that certainly seems to be borne out by the fact that, as a share of the total population, blacks are also about 2.5x more likely to die from the disease as whites.

Why those disproportionate rates? It could be several things. It could be poverty and lack of access to good medical care. It could be the types of jobs held by certain groups. It could be the dependence on public transportation. It could be elevated stress levels from living in dysfunctional neighborhoods.

There are a number of potential reasons for which it's quite reasonable to draw a straight line back to systemic racism and the way it's impacted the black community. While the article doesn't go to the trouble of making a case, the hypothesis itself isn't unreasonable.

Is that sufficiently on topic or do you want to just go back to ridiculing the idea without having to think about it?

I agree with the OP on this. Touchy people always find an excuse to get offended.

This is the joke:
Low number of blacks hospitalized = "systemic racism"
High number of blacks hospitalized = "systemic racism"

We makes you think the point went over our heads? Not only did the point not go over our heads, but the OP has a history of deliberately ignoring the history of racism in this country and the way it frames a whole host of issues and of making excuses for the racist comments of others. I would argue that not only did we not miss the point, but that you, with your single post ever, have missed some important context about the OP's SOP that some of the rest of us are aware of.

This post demonstrates poor reading comprehension.

The issue is not that so many of them are "getting treated in hospital". No, they are suggesting that systemic racism could be a reason why blacks are disproportionately hit HARDER by the disease. It's not about how many in the hospital.

That is some disappointing reading comprehension.

If you're going to gloat about people you disagree with, it'd lend creedence to your argument if you understood theirs.

It's a joke. Get a sense of humor. I don't care about the OP's post history. In fact, that post of his you shared makes me think he's a cool dude. He seems like someone who is both funny and reasonable. That's charming. You just try too hard to see "racism" in everything.
