That's what I mean by things will probably eventually get back to normal. That includes facemask wearing and social distancing at church. Hopefully eventually Covid will become a commonplace virus like common influenza.

The strains of flu we suffer from now are descendent from the "Spanish" flu of 1918. That disease was able to mutate completely out of hand because we did not have a vaccine for it.

We don't want Covid-19 to become a "commonplace virus" like that, and we have (or had) an opportunity to prevent that from happening. We seem to have flubbed that opportunity out of sheet imbecility.

As long as the notion of maintaining zero-covid cases doesn't gain currency - things will get back to normal.

How do vaccines prevent mutation - its not clear in the UK how well exactly the vacines are against the Delta and later strains of this coronavirus. But I think there comes a point that we have to say we've done all that can sensibly be expected in terms of mandatory restrictions, measures, now its time to be sensible about it - we live with many other conditions many of which are self-inflicted - such as alcohol abuse - why is there not more of a campaign to get some people to drink sensibly and to stop going out and getting 'smashed' at the weekend - abuse of alcohol puts a strain on health services, police, and causes social disorder and suppresses immunity - Anyone see the elephant in the kitchen yet? Some countries don't have such a problem with alcoholism - I think its partly due to temperament and attitudes towards drinking that are instilled when people are still in their youth.

A better comparison might be polio, a disease from which the majority of people recover, but which in a minority of cases causes very serious long-term damage or death. Polio is still endemic in some parts of the world, but because of the serious damage it can cause, there is an ongoing effort to wipe it out worldwide.

How do vaccines prevent mutation

Mutation happens as populations of a virus live and multiply inside their human or animal hosts. By reducing the number of humans carrying the virus, vaccines can reduce the opportunities for viruses to reproduce and mutate.
