  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Just thought I'd start a thread about cover songs. I love hearing a cover done well, and enjoy finding new ones. I was thinking everyone could list several favorite cover songs.
A few of mine:
Death Cab For Cutie covering The Smiths/This Charming Man
Pete Yorn covering The Ramones/I wanna be your boyfriend
Johnny Cash covering NIN/Hurt

just a few but I have tons more.

Save Ferris covering Dexy's Midnight Runners "come on eileen" (thanks for the clear up Qyot27)
Golfinger covering "99 red baloons" (not sure who first did it)
Cake covering Diana Ross's "I will surivive"
Urge overkill covering "girl, you'll be a women soon"

all those, IMO, are better than the originals

Third Eye Blind-Train In Vain (orig. The Clash)
Afghan Whigs-Lost In The Supermarket (orig. The Clash)

Klank-I'll Wait (orig. Van Halen)

I think that's a good list. All these covers are awesome.

I mean, and granted the fact that I don't like Marilyn Manson at all, but his cover of Tainted Love was actually performed quite well. In fact, that's probably the only thing I could remotely stand of his.

The Goldfinger cover is awesome too. I dunno why I forgot that  . BTW, it was originally performed by the German band Nena, and had two different versions, a German one and an English one. The Goldfinger cover does a really nice job of combining the two, IMO. And Men At Work didn't do "Come On, Eileen" originally; it was Dexy's Midnight Runners.

My mum heard that cover a few months ago and nearly choked! I do like it though, even though it's a bit unusual.

My two picks for the moment:

Guns N Roses - Knocking on Heaven's Door
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah.

More to come soon.

Not that; just the whole vibe of the cover, I think. Just thinking, did Diana Ross sing "I Will Survive", because I remember Gloria Gaynor did the best known one.

Rufus, all I can do is laugh heartily in pseudo-agreement.

Ben Folds did a great one of "Oops I Did it Again" on one of our Aussie chat shows. And that Lemonheads one is good as well.
