  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Most churches and governments try to discourage marriage within the third degree the reason being the increased risk of a physically or mentally compromised child.

I do know that some churches will grant a dispensation for such a marriage in certain extenuating circumstances. An example might be an older couple with little likelihood of another marriage possibility.

As you might know, the children of Adam and Eve were marrying each other. But at that time there might not have been the possible DNA problems which we have now.
Also Noah and his family were marrying each other and having children.

is it ok for Christians to marry cousins and then have biological children with them?
Wasn't that what Jacob did? Although he did also marry 2 cousins, and each cousin brought him a concubine, which would likely be frowned upon today in most church circles...

So, better known versions of Christianity do not have us following the example of humans in our past Biblical history, then, but we need to follow the example of Jesus.

"And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma." (Ephesians 5:2)

King David also > had a lot of women, plus he killed a guy in order to cover up for his getting her pregnant, as ones understand it. That, too, is not an example human which we follow, hopefully.

No. Rachel and Leah were sisters.

Btw, Abraham married his own sister.

Is anyone here married to their cousin?
To what degree?

My wife has Waggoners way back in her family tree so we might be something like 47th cousins a dozen times removed.

It is interesting to note the royal families of several cultures practiced brother-sister marriages for dynastic purposes. Two examples are the pharaohnic dynasties of Egypt and the Hawaiian royal family. While there is a risk of "inferior" offspring in such matings there is an equal possibility of "superior" offspring.

While there may be secular legal prohibitions, it does not violate scripture.
I don't think having sex with a child violates scripture, either, but we know it's wrong, and we also know that children born to cousins likely will have serious medical issues.

We have a saying about "kissing cousins" in the South, meaning that they are related to you somehow or another, but aren't 1st cousins. So you can kiss them, marry them, legally.

Of course it used to be pretty common for folks to marry their cousins. Especially in royalty & whatnot where they were wanting to keep the blood lines "pure" (the irony of that was unknown to them at the time). Nowadays since we know about the risks for cousins procreating that folks in the past didn't know I think it's a thornier ethical issue, on top of a legal one. There's some cousins who barely knew each other growing up, so it wouldn't be weird for them falling in love as adults like it would with falling in love with a sibling. But if they're wanting to have biological children together, that's a problem. That's not fair to the kids.
