We have slaves now; they are just called the dishwasher, the washing machine and oven. The culture doesn't need slaves now. Just like in the North during the Civil War they out grew slavery, but still needed them in the South. Do you know some that were set free in the South wanted to return to slavery instead of having to work for wages? It all depends on the owner. The owner now would be your boss. It's much better to have a decent boss then one who abuses his power. The bible also had the "Year of Jubilee" where all slaves were set free.

The seven year freedom cycle was only valid for the people of Israel. People from the nations could be enslaved for life.

If that were the case then they would be released after 49 years during the Jubilee. Slavery is more of an object lesson to show us the bondage of sin. We know that sin can be passed from generation to generation. "he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation." We saw this in the south were slavery passed from generation to generation. Esp you have men that were having babies with their slave girl and by law they could sell their own children into slavery. This was never the case for the Hebrew or for the Israel people. A son or daughter was born free even if the mother was a slave. As far as the Bible is concerned you have Hebrew and non Hebrew or Gentiles. Now God is doing a work with the Gentiles in the same way He worked with Israel. So there is no non Gentile or person that would belong to another nation today. There are only saved and unsaved people.

I do not eat processed food so I know that it takes about an hour a day just to prepare food. In Hong Kong they have domestic helpers. The women go out and work, so they will hire a young girl to take care of the house for her. If they make $2000 a month they they will pay around $500 for their maid, with her food and expenses. They have two year contracts. Usually the maid comes from another country and so if they leave before their contract is up then they do not get a plane ticket to go home and sometimes they will keep their passport. In Kowloon one of the districts in Hong Kong the Church had an apartment for their church members that did not have a job and were looking for a new contract. There could be five to seven girls living there at any given time.

You think slavery was justified because kids would lose the money on their way home. Most people would call that bovine excrement, except not in so scientific of terms.

This is usually the case in Asia. When they go to work in the Middle East they may go longer without going home for a visit to see their wife and their kids. If you do a google search on "my-husband-cheated-me-our-maid" you will get over 6 million hits. My guess would be that if you asked the maid she would say that she was raped. Although she most likely would be to ashamed to talk about it. So you can say slavery does not go on any longer, but things have not changed all that much.

Have I missed something here? Are you saying that a contract of employment is equivalent to slavery? Have you never heard about the slave trade? people being forcibly ripped from their homeland, transported and bought and sold like cattle, beaten, raped, dying from exhaustion and disease. I doubt it was much different in Biblical times either (and I'm not talking about indentured servitude). As an Englishman I'm thoroughly ashamed of our country's involvement in the slave trade, these lame attempts at justifying slavery are pathetic.

The KJV for the KJV ONLY people tends to use the word servant. In your case servant maybe a better translation because slave seems to have connotation to you that are not implied in the Bible.

Don't give up your day job to become a Bible interpreter. This is the passage: 21:21 "Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money." "He shall not be" are words that were added in the English. So we have two Hebrew words here: "punished" and "money". So it looks to me like the punishment or the vengeance has to be in the form of money.

This is a fantastic question. If there was ever a Bible verse taken out of context, it would have to be the verse in Exodus 21 regarding the beating of a slave. Now a days they do not use the word slave, they use the word maid. This is where we get the wood maiden. Or at wedding they use the term maid of honor or a bride maid. The women have to go out and work, either in a factory or as a domestic helper until they find a man who wants to marry them so they can settle down and raise a family. So they all get very excited when one of them gets married and gets to excape from their rather dull and boring life.

The infidels are all worried about the domestic servants being abused and in some cases there is abuse. We just recently saw a case where a foreign dignitary was being abusive to a servant. There was a huge uproar because in India they are considered to be above being persecuted for abuse of common people. Still the biggest problem for the domestic helpers today is that they have a job that is dull, boring and it is actually the women that abuses them the most, not the man. Unless there is some sort of a problem where they are getting raped. Then if the man rapes them, the women has the right to beat her for allowing the man to take advantage of her like that.

It is always the dream of the maid that someday she would be the lady of the house. I know of one case where this happened. A man was sleeping with the maid and when the wife found out she threw a fit. The man ended up throwing the wife out and keeping the maid. Although I do not know why, she actually is a nice person. It all worked out because she found a man to take care of her. Of course here in American you had people like Gloria Steinem created a feminist movement to try and deal with some of the problems associated with a system like this. So we do not see as much of it here in this country as we see in other developed nations. If people here do have domestic workers they are a lot more quiet about it.

What church was corrupt in England? It was "Bloody Mary" daughter of Henry VIII, that was burning Christians at the stake. They rejoiced that they were counted worthy. They came to American to avoid persecution. Faith is not by works, so they did not have to suffer for what they believe.
