He was married to Elisabeth Elliot, the author. In 1956, he was killed in Ecuador by the Auca Indians to whom he went as a missionary. He, and the other men who died with him, were armed. They never drew their guns on their attackers. Elisabeth Elliot took their baby daughter and went to live among the people who had killed her husband. Through her witness, they became Christians. God is indeed merciful!
