THE CONQUEROR WORM
Lo! 'tis a gala night
Within the lonesome latter years!
An angel throng, bewinged, bedight
In veils, and drowned in tears,
Sit in a theatre, to see
A play of hopes and fears,
While the orchestra breathes fitfully
The music of the spheres.

Mimes, in the form of God on high,
Mutter and mumble low,
And hither and thither fly-
Mere puppets they, who come and go
At bidding of vast formless things
That shift the scenery to and fro,
Flapping from out their Condor wings
Invisible Woe!

That motley drama- oh, be sure
It shall not be forgot!
With its Phantom chased for evermore,
By a crowd that seize it not,
Through a circle that ever returneth in
To the self-same spot,
And much of Madness, and more of Sin,
And Horror the soul of the plot.

But see, amid the mimic rout
A crawling shape intrude!
A blood-red thing that writhes from out
The scenic solitude!
It writhes!- it writhes!- with mortal pangs
The mimes become its food,
And seraphs sob at vermin fangs
In human gore imbued.

Out- out are the lights- out all!
And, over each quivering form,
The curtain, a funeral pall,
Comes down with the rush of a storm,
While the angels, all pallid and wan,
Uprising, unveiling, affirm
That the play is the tragedy, "Man,"
And its hero the Conqueror Worm.

-Edgar Allan Poe (1843)

Lets move from theology to kneeology!! Power for victory in spiritual warfare is found in prayer.

There's a wideness in God's Mercy like the wideness of the sea;
there's a kindness in His justice which is more than liberty...
But we make His love too narrow, with false limits of our own,
and we magnify His strictness with a zeal He will not own.
For the love of God is broader than the measure of man's mind,
and the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully kind.

True Drops of Love

We must not think that our love has to be extraordinary. But we do need to love without getting tired. How does a lamp burn? Through the continuous input of small drops of oil. These drops are the small things of daily life: faithfulness, small words of kindness, a thought for others, our way of being quiet, of looking, of speaking, and of acting. They are the true drops of love that keep our lives and relationships burning like a lively flame.

REGIONS OF THE BLEST AFAR
" Father, I firmly do believe---
I know---for Death, Who comes for me
From regions of the blest afar,
Where there is nothing to deceive,
Hath left an iron gate ajar,
And rays of truth you cannot see
Are flashing thro' Eternity---
I do believe that Eblis hath
A snare in ev'ry human path---
Else how, When in the holy grove
I wondered of the idol, Love,
Who daily scents his snowy wings
With incense and burnt offerings
From the most unpolluted things,
Who pleasant bowers are yet so riven
Above the trelliced rays of heaven."

ON SCIENCE AND UNCERTAINTY

" We will always be mired in error. The most each generation can hope for is to reduce the error bars a little, and to add to the body of data to which error bars apply. The error bar is a pervasive , visible self assessment of the reliability of our knowledge. You can often see error bars in public opinion polls...Imagine a society in which every speech in the "Congressional Record," every television commericial, every sermon had an accompanying error bar or its equivalent."
Carl Sagan

BUSCO EN LA MUERTE LA VIDA

Busco en la muerte la vida,
salud en la enfermedad,
en la prisión libertad,
en lo cerrado salida,
y en el traidor lealtad.
Pero mi suerte, de quien
jamás espero algún bien,
con el Cielo ha estatuido
que, pues lo imposible pido,
lo posible aun no me den

[ Tis mine to seek for life in death,
Health in disease seek I,I seek in prison freedom's breath,
In traitors loyalty.
So Fate that ever scorns to grant
Or grace or boon to me,Since what can never be I want,
Denies me what might be.]

Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quijote de la Mancha

Death Be Not Proud
Death be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for, thou art not soe,
For, those, whom thou think'st, thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poor death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures bee,
Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee doe go,
Rest of their bones, and souls delivery.
Thou art slave to Fate, Chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, warre, and sickness dwell,
And poppie, or charms can make us sleep as well,
And better then thy stroke; why swell'st thou then?
One short sleep past, wee wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die.

"THREE PREACHERS sat discussing the best positions for prayer while a telephone repairman worked nearby.

"Kneeling is definely the best," claimed one.

"No," another contended. "I get the best results standing with my hands outstretched to Heaven."

"You're both wrong," the third insisted. "The most effective prayer position is lying prostrate, face down on the floor."

The repairman could not contain himself no longer. "Hey, fellas," he interrupted, "the best prayin' I ever did was hangin' upside down from a telephone pole."
