  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Contemplative prayer?

How do we know when it's sincere? And how do we know when repetitions are vain?

Most definitely when during a prayer, repeating the same thing over and over has no significance, it's done in vain.

So if it has significance, it's not in vain.

I mean, I agree that repeated prayers can be used not so well. But not that any repetition is meaningless and therefore vain.

Scripture says God already knows what me need before we ask. What does that mean?

You seem to be asking a rhetorical question, but I can't guess the answer. Are you saying we shouldn't pray at all?

But there is no hint of contemplative prayer in scripture, and Christians don't require a special place to meet. I condemn it on the basis that it's an unbiblical practice of opening one's self to the spirit world to talk to what people think is God.

Romans 8:26 comes to mind.

I am trying to find the bible verse to this? can you link it?
Matthew 6:7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

What about the Catholics who say repeated prayers? just curious

Nothing wrong in that.

If you find a beautiful prayer and decide to repeat it then so be it. The Our Father is such a prayer, given to us by Our Lord.

My friend is a buddhist. She prays to God aswell as being a Buddhist. They dont worship any god.
