I want to know... what ARE these illegal console mods I see mentioned on this forum? Wouldn't it be easy to wreck your system playing around with it like that? I'm not interested in doing it.... don't even have a recent game system. Just wondering what this is.

Its very easy to wreck your system. But its a risk many people are willing to take (me for example).

Modding isn't exactly illegal, its putting a special chip in a console (a mod chip) to play back up's of games you already own, or turning your console into a mini home theater. Only backing up games you don't already own is illegal, or downloading them, again, is illegal.

What most Mod Chips do is allow the console to play games or DVDs from different regions. For example, we use PAL in the UK, but American games use NTSC. If I wanted to play an American PS2 game, I'd have to get my PS2 chipped.
Same goes for turning it into a multi-region DVD player.

Your system is unlikley to be dammaged by a mod... your game might be, but the solution to that issue is to reinstal the game.

Some mods are real poor, and are just boring, or on the verge of cheating if not outright cheating, others can be really good, ads to the game, whole new levels, weapons, magic, or whatever. Some are technical ones to iron out bugs, which haven't been addressed by official add-ons. Others are game cracks, keygens and the like, which are used to make unauthorised copies of the game. I suggest that most people steer clear of cracks if you have moral issues with the law. Though making copies as reserves, incase you damage your CD, or just because you dont want to use your CD anymore, are bordering on the legal side (depends on the licence agreement) but this is often abused by those wishing to make illegal copies of the game, for ditribution.

Consoles are different, but work on the same principal, though I believe you have to get special software to actually write game CD's for most consoles. Not being a console fan, I dont really take much interest in that side of modding.

Most, but not all. I believe that PSX and PS2 games can simply be copied using a burning program's Copy CD or Copy DVD function, since neither of them operate on a special type of disc. PSX and PS2 run on standard-issue CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs. Dreamcast and Gamecube games use special types of discs (for the DC, it's not a special physical type; it's a special type of burning), but they can be read by a computer's DVD or CD drive (it takes a special type of ripping technique to copy them, I think; I've never tried, anyway). I'm not sure about XBox games, though. I do know that the images of any of these consoles' games (well, maybe not Gamecube) can be burnt by a typical CD or DVD burning drive, whichever is required.
