• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I had a blasphemous thought today, or at least I thought I did. Then I was reminded of what my friend told me today at the church BBQ about drumming. Then I thought about a drumming style like The White Stripes. Then that thought of The White Stripes led me to think about one of White Stripes songs that mentioned The Holy Spirit. If I drum (like a drummer), is anything wrong?

The other thing is, while typing The Holy Spirit, I had another offensive thought. What do I do?

I think all of this is just OCD struggles, guitar intro. As long as you aren't playing any songs that have irreverent lyrics, I think you should just forget it. Realize that these thoughts are just borne out of fear. If you will pay LESS attention to them, they will diminish in frequency.

If you could stop all of this would you ? Meaning if you could stop the thoughts today right now would you ? If you can answer yes that shows a great deal about the condition of youre heart .. see the fear is there what if i really do want to think these things but i suppose it is true that if we really did then we would not be asking the question nor would we care

That struck my attention. What happens if I was? I was noodling on guitar and then I just played a similar riff that reminded me of a band. I am unsure if that band is good or bad, but when I was just playing around with my guitar, I played a riff similar to that band's song. The band is called 'Wolfmother'. Now I am confused, is there anything I should be concerned about?

don't be confused ... actually i see the answer in what you just said you were not conciously deciding to play something you shouldn't it just happened ... i wasn't premeditated ... the unpardonable sin is ... and it is done without the slightest fear .... a person who commits this sin i have been told never ever ever fears that they have commited it ... they never regret what they have done and it cannot be done by accident ..

Not sure if this is the same topic, but we were watching the Olympics and my brother said 'Canada will finish fourth' or something like that. I ignored him, but then my dad asked me which round the diving event was at, and I replied 'round 3'. When I said '3', I thought of The Trinity. Would it be like ignoring the 3 or The Trinity?

Hey Guitarintro,
One thing you need to understand about what is going on with you is that there is a malfunction in the area of your brain that has to do with the fear response. This is also referred to as the fight or flight response. In the person with OCD this area of the brain is misfiring due to a chemical imbalance. It's like having a smoke alarm that keeps going off when there's no fire. Since there's no real "fire" no real dangerous situation to be alarmed about this excess adrenaline/fear response needs something to attach itself to. In OCD it will always attach itself to subjects and things which are very important to the sufferer. It want's very badly to have something to chew on in order to expend all that excess adrenaline. Therefore, it will grab on to all sorts of thoughts and blow them up way out of proportion. It's like the anxiety center of your brain is a big wad of fly paper and when these types of intrusive/unwanted thoughts wander into your consciousness they get stuck there just as a fly would.
That's why these thoughts feel so threatening. They really have no validity at all but the intense anxiety and fear response tricks us into thinking that they are of extreme urgency. This is why with exposure/response therapy we have to learn to just let them be there and ignore them.
It's all just OCD trying to have it's way with you. But you still have a choice about how to respond to the thoughts. You can either fight them and feel much worse or you can just let them be there and ignore them.
Praying for you,
Mitzi

I am struggling with bad thoughts in general. For example, I thought: 'if I counter bad thoughts repetitively, it maybe/is blasphemous.' However, I still countered these thoughts repetitively. I hope it is not blasphemous. I even told myself repeating these counter thoughts are NOT blasphemous.

I decided to quickly turn off the television and quickly pray to God.

So I went to fellowship today; it was Bible Study.

I looked at the sheet they handed out and I thought I read the word 'blasphemy'. Moments later I laughed/giggled because the person beside me said something. When I looked at the word carefully, I realized it was not the word 'blasphemy', but it was a different word instead. Then I thought, if I laughed at the word 'blasphemy', is that wrong?
