  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If I have ever had the urge to seek Confession outside of saturday at the regular hours, I've never been turned away. Part of the problem is... people don't think they have anything to be sorry for.
I agree, NYJ. And who says that confession times should be convenient? They should be accessible, yes. But convenient? It is I who must make the effort. I doubt that the Prodgial Son had a fast trip back to his father. He had to hike a bit, sacrifice, and make the effort. The Church and her priests are here to serve us, yes, but her job is not to make things convenient. Convenience (like democracy) is an American ideal, not a Catholic one.

The reason I started this thread was because I went to confession this evening and really experienced the freedom of the Sacrament. I confessed things that I was truly sorry for, and when I heard those coveted words, "I absolve you from all of your sins in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit", I could almost hear the heavenly hosts rejoicing. Christ's blood truly covered me today. Praised be Jesus Christ now and forever!

A priest is only obligated to give one hour to Confession every week.

Heh, mine's not even an hour.. but only 40 minutes.

We have two parishes for a total of maybe 2500 families between both churches... and i've seen about 3-4 people in the confessional every week. :(

priest that are given a gift of being a good confessor are always in short supply... .
My brother LOVES hearing confessions-- he really loves to say MAss--but he feels such great joy at souls being returned to a state of grace, souls being rejuvenated through confession. There have been days where he has literally spent all day in the confessional. He also loves doing baptisms-- seeing the souls come to life in Christ!! He feels like confession is like a mini baptism of sorts....

I love when you tell stories about your brother, Shannon. Please make sure he knows that we love him and are praying for him.

I will( and it means more to me than you could possibly know)-- there is actually someone who posts on here who has gone to him in confession (other than me, that is!). How cool is that!!

I have such deep and unexplainable love for priests like your brother. I am hoping that, God-willing (and theology committee approving), I will be able to write my graduate thesis on "Priest as Father".

That's very cool! If he were here, he'd get the biggest hug from me.

That's really interesting.... my brother and I have talked quite a bit about the struggles we have both encoutered as we have become parents- me physically and him spiritually. The struggles, because of our shared upbringing, are quite similar, and our challenges very much the same- though our vocations are so different.

That is really interesting. I don't know if I shared the card I bought for my priest this June ... he was celebrating the 20th anniversary of his priestly ordination, and since I wasn't able to attend those festivities because of a previous commitment, I gave him his gift on Father's Day. The card I found said: Father. A man can be a parent by simply having a child, but to be a father, a model of strength, love, and wisdom, that is something else entirely. That is truly how I see good priests like your brother.
