  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

English isn't my first language. For me Aronra speaks a little too fast and his phrases are too dense. So it is sometimes hard to understand what he says. Other contributors like Thunderfoot or Darkmatter 2525 are easier to understand.
My favourite speaker is Potholer54 (though he posts too infrequently!). I like Thunderfoot, but I find his voice too off-putting to watch his videos any more :/ I remember AronRa when he used to be here at CF, it's like knowing a celebrity :p

I hear Thunderfoot and Mr. PZ Myers now hate each other more than they hate religion.

Yeah, it seems PZ is all for "free thought" unless your thoughts aren't in congruence with his. They got into a spat about the role of feminist issues and it's involvement around the free thought movement. Thunderf00t then acted a little inappropriately towards being banned from FreeThoughtBlogs.com.

Meh, whatever.

It seems to me that that is a bit of a misrepresentation of the behavior of Thunderf00t. He acted like a jerk on FTB, got booted for that, and acted like a jerk some more.

I apparently missed this entire Thunderfoot / PZ Myers / FTB / feminism thing. I knew that there was a grumbling about women, feminism, and conventions, but I'm otherwise ignorant. Can someone give me the skinny?
My perspective: A number of women and men in the secular / skeptic movement are pointing out the sexism within it. Others within the movement do not like that and tempers flared. Since that time, the women and men pointing out the sexism, as well as racism and other "you're not a white male"-isms keep pointing this out, and those don't liking it respond with 50% bad arguments, 50% harassment. Although I may be understating the amount of harassment. But that is my perception of what is happening.

As a somewhat more serious response, a number of people are currently vocal on what they see as problems within the skeptic / secular movement in getting minority groups and women involved. They think the cause for this is sexism and latent racism within the movement and propose ways to act on this. Other have criticized this. Because this all involves human, both the pointing out as the criticism of pointing out have not always been done with a lot of tact, hence tempers have flared. I personally think that the criticasters are doing a lot of harassing on the pretense of doing it "for the lulz", and then complain about not being given a fair reading. But other's mileage may vary on that.

Misogyny, racism, and sexism pretty much has religions as it's source.
Is that why e-scientists exclusively refer to the Biblical Jews as "ignorant, Bronze Age, goat herders"?

We had a missionary to Israel at our church just recently, and while at his table, I told him:

"I deal with atheists online, and the one question I like to ask them is if Israel is the Promised Land. If they're honest, they'll say, 'no.'"

And did he reply with "why are online atheist's opinions regarding Israel important to you?" "Do you also ask them about the best laundry detergent, too?"

Few real scientists refer to them thusly. But it is irrational to assume Bronze Age people would know the same amount of information we currently do.

So why assume they were in full possession of the facts on everything?

"I deal with atheists online, and the one question I like to ask them is if Israel is the Promised Land. If they're honest, they'll say, 'no.'"

How many people have to die for the idea of a supernatural promised land? How long must hatreds be kindled because someone read somewhere that in some distant past some supernatural being told someone that this particular dusty corner of a desert is THE PROMISED LAND?

I am glad the Jews have a home and it relates to places that they arose from, but I'm saddened that another group became a political football (The Palestinians). I understand that the original state of Israel in the 1940's would have gladly been integrated.

But the minute someone puts the phrase "Promised Land" on a piece of land it carries with it more than just a few syllables.

Israel is no more the "Promised Land" of anyone than any place on the planet earth is promised to anyone.

Religion has been a great mask for the inherently evil actions of man in that part of the world. From the slaughter mandated in the stories of the Old Testament as the land was wrenched (bloodily) from the hands of the Caananites by the Israelites to the modern day Islamic attacks on the state of Israel.

It's no one's holy land that is soaked in that much blood. Unless one worships the letting of blood and the taking of life. Only then is it "holy".

Jesus does laundry too?
Psalm 51:7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
