  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'd be happy with you showing one accurate record of somebody saying it when are not quoting you saying it. I mean if theres soooo many of them it shouldn't be that hard.

I apparently missed this entire Thunderfoot / PZ Myers / FTB / feminism thing. I knew that there was a grumbling about women, feminism, and conventions, but I'm otherwise ignorant. Can someone give me the skinny?

Elevatorgate gives way to Dear Muslima gives way to PZ being as jerky to his fellow atheists as to religious believers gives way to Thunderf00t on Freethought Blogs and the rest is an as yet ongoing history.

There's a 6500+ post thread on the advent of Atheism+ (branched from the Skepchick/Feminist schizm with organized Skepticism) that has a lot of discussion of PZ and the Social Justice Warriors on Free Thought Blogs/Skepchick.

6500 posts is a lot. Can you summarise? Who did what, why, and who do you think was right?

Google Elevatorgate and that will get you started.

Short version.
Some skepchicks and female atheists started embracing Feminism 101 (Google that) and wanted it to be more of a focus at organized skeptical and atheist conferences. Some of them actually wanted it to be the primary focus it seemed. PZ jumped on the bandwagon and decided that anyone who didn't accept the strident, militant feminism expressed by these folks was a misogynist who fundamentally hated women. Thunderf00t was brought in as a Free Thought Blogs blogger and some crap I can't remember the details of went down between him and other people at FTB. He was eventually exiled from FTB and went back to YouTube casting asperions on those who he felt wronged him. PZ responded as only PZ can.

Shorter version.
A number of attention harlots who the vast majority of people have never heard of nor care what is written or said by them, have been battling via blogs relatively few people read and videos relatively few people watch. It's an echo chamber of drama, ego and self-importance.

Shortest version.
Time sink train wreck I haven't been able to keep my eyes off of for 2 1/2 years.

Oh wow, that definitely sounds like something I want to steer clear of. I Googled it a few days ago, and it took me to RationalWiki, but they were hilariously biased in their description of events.

There is a webcomic I read that semi-regularly delves into the world of comic books and action figures, and there's something uncannily similar happening there. Apparently women going to comicon (et al) were declared as False Fans by some comic book artist or other, and aggro ensued.

I wonder what it is about conventions that sparks these pro/anti feminist dramas
