  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It's up to the Pastor. I'm not for a clear cut no exceptions rule that says everyone must be confirmed, but they certianly need to be examined and the Pastor must feel the person is ready.

Personally I recieved communion before being confirmed, I am sure there are others who the Pastor wouldn't have extended it to. It all depends on the person and if the Pastor feels they are ready.

Don't you know how to start a new thread?
Probably too complicated. Guess they feel it easier to ressurect the dead thread. I wonder if there is a way to lock a thread after a given period of time, perhaps after three months?

:)In my Congregation (LCC) we do allow admission to communicant membership by "Profession of Faith". But before this can occur the person must have been baptized in the name of the Trinity, and examined by the Pastor and at least one Elder. Not all Congregations and Pastors allow this. Taking class is a good thing. When my wife joined she had to take the adult class, and I went with her. The Pastor was great, and I also got a lot out of it myself. This young man would also benefit and grow in faith by attending these classes.

Memorizing a book does not equal faith. Someone can memorize every page of the bible, it doesn't mean they are saved if they don't really beleive it.

The reverse is also true, someone can have faith and belief but not have something memorized word for word.

If the Pastor does not feel that the person is ready he is perfectly right, whether the person in question has memorized the small catechism or not.

You're correct it doesn't mean they are saved, but think of how much more he/she will have to fall on by memorizing scripture.
