- I have run into people who don't understand the difference between Judaism and Christianity. They know absolutely nothing about Judaism and so assume it's essentially the same.

- I'm dealing with a friend now who is being told that Israelis don't belong in Israel because they aren't the real Hebrews and the world has been duped. She's reading The Thirteenth Tribe. This is a grown woman! We've been sorting it out for a couple weeks. I give her a little bit of information at a time. I'm not that knowledgeable myself but it's been a nice opportunity to learn.

- Oh, I met a girl who thought Jewish people never drink alcohol! I thought that was humorous.

I know there are more but I can't think of them right now. I do have a childhood friend who just learned of my intent to convert. He wanted to inform me that Jews murder Palestinians at an obscene rate.

Isn't that what they say about Mormons, too? Do the Mormons have relations through holes in sheets? I really did hear that.

It's often the case that people think ALL KINDS of things about those whom they are unfamiliar with. I'm not familiar enough with Mormon customs to know what's true and what's untrue. I know this definitely isn't a Jewish custom. :)

I would imagine the idea comes from them wearing their temple undergarments.

Unlike so many other religions, I've found that Messianic religions look to their Savior to give them those things it is up to God alone to give. It is not our good karma, nor our religious discipline, but His goodness and love for us that gets us all the blessings we have. True Messianic believers, I would say, live in a state of humble appreciation that they cannot control God with good deeds, but welcome blessings from God with an open heart.

So do non-Messianic Jews when it comes to YHVH ;)

How damaging is the Messianic Movement

How damaging is the Messianic Movement to the Gospel of Jesus Christ going forth?

Now before anyone starts getting up in arms, I am not referring to the Jewish believers who have a Messianic Jewish style of worship. What I am referring to is the growing number of Gentiles, that were formerly involved with the church, who now have decided to become "Messianic”.

I've gotten these too. I actually had to remove people on facebook that I thought I knew, because they were so insistent that even those who went through the Holocaust (G-d forbid!) are really not "the real Jews".

Then I've had the whole "Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion" thrown at me as well. The gall of some people.

Chava, I just wear the stuff that ModestWorld and Tzinius have. I have about 40 different hats as well, and smaller kerchiefs. I don't know where they got that idea.. :sorry: However, I have found that the Turkish ladies here wear scarves in a much similar manner if they're not wearing Hijabs. It makes things really complicated. I'm finding I have to opt for smaller coverings or old-timey snoods (1940s look) or rectangular scarves. still working out where I can find some more to vary my color base as I have only one pink rectangular scarf.

I've had cats and a dog before, it's really not an issue. I guess they were getting some of the more stringent sects of Islam confused with Judaism. I've also been asked if I can have alcohol. Um, yes.

Muktzeh (מוקצה) refers to things that you are not allowed to handle on Shabbat and festivals because handling them could lead someone unwittingly to desecrate the day.

For example, a pencil is muktzeh on Shabbat, since handling a pencil (or pen) might make you unwittingly start writing something. You have no need to handle a pencil except for writing, so why do you need to handle it on Shabbat?

Flashdrives and other electronic devices are considered "muktzeh" on Shabbat, as are animals outside of your house. I've never understood anything to say that a pet is muktzeh (since it's like one of your family), but it's certainly true that feeding a pet chametz-based pet food during Pesach is a real problem.

(ChavaK, I know you're aware of all of the issues. I just didn't know if other readers would know what muktzeh was.) :)

So then if you own any livestock you don't feed them?

Anyway about the pet, which oddly enough when I got to that post about the pets, my doggie moved her head over onto the laptop and sent me back to the Pork thread! :D

There are so many foods out there now as more and more animals are having grain problems it shouldn't be hard to feed one's dog or cat during Passover. My dog never had to change her food because it contains no grains, meat and vegetables only. Even if it wasn't available what's to stop one from giving cooked meat, and veggies during that week? My doggies have always loved Matzah. In fact I left a basket of it after the Seder one year on the sofa table while clearing up and came home the next night to find my Doggie had helped herself to it! After that I kept leftovers and gave as treats! :)

I am curious about the livestock. They eat grains and must be fed. I've noticed throughout Torah HaShem has made provisions for these types of issues. Seems we're (humankind) the ones who add more to it that is expected and we end up sometimes painting ourselves into a corner.

Traditionally, we didn't feed them grain, or our pets for that matter. They ate grass, hay, alfalfa and weeds and herbs. In fact, a lot of the reason our livestock are so medicated, is because of how we feed them, and WHAT we feed them. Cows were not meant to eat the way they eat these days, nor are the goats and sheep we eat. :(

Our pets ate whatever vermin and fish and birds that went their way, and our cast offs (bones, meat, veggies etc).

There are so many dogs that are true celiacs, like the Irish Setter. That's why there are so few Setters, and they have trouble conceiving and carrying puppies to term; and have so many disorders. Look up DogtorJ's website, he has so much info on it.

When we have pets as a family, we'll be mostly grain free. Otherwise we can't have them, due to our celiac. Their saliva gets the gluten all over their coats, us, their food and the dust from it spreads all over and we will react. Dr. Pitcairn has a lovely book on animal health, we just will modify his recipes a bit to not include so many grains, and what grains we do supply (in the form of rice or noodles), will be gluten free.

That's funny....but then again, if Jesus was attending a social event such as a wedding, I don't see why others would be tripped out at pastors who like to skate board.....or surf, for that matter. Not all ministers simply preach behind a pulpit.

He might be confused for a holy roller.:)

I attend a southern nondenominational, pentecostal sort of, charismatic church. People say "if I visit will you be sure to keep the snakes inside the box" ?

Yedida, I bet you probably heard this a few times before becoming MJ.

For me it was a little bit the opposite. I broke away from the stiff Baptist/Methodist and went into the newer non-denom/inter-denom and I was always being questioned about the "holy rolling" (hands raised and swaying, etc.) and all those funny languages that were being used and somehow understood. (This was back in the early 70s.)
I became MJ after a 10 year hiatus away from the Lord and I was MJ for over a year before I knew it had a name and more people like me!!

Yedida, sounds like an interesting journey!
I had this preconception; I guess- you being close to those Appalachian mountains and all.:)

 I think I know what you referring to. There does seem to be quite a bit of the snake-handling types in these here mountains. But I'm a city girl, ex-almost-original-hippie of the mid 60s. Closest I got to snakes was crayfishin'. :D

Studying some of the history behind why many of those churches chose to handle snakes is intriguing. Of course, I like the way that snakes operate..as they're beautiful creatures. But I'm not going to test it. One of the fellowships I go to, which is Charismatic, had to address that same issue when it came to people trying to stereotype as if anything connected with "charismatic" terminology means you're like the Churches in North Georgia that handle snake and drink poison. To give those churches props, I do respect the fact that they do try to take some parts of the Word literally when it comes to Mark 16---as Paul did encounter snakes on Malta and was not harmed when one had bitten him. However, he didn't go seeking one out as if he was a snake charmer
