  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Anybody read them?

Iconic figures, moral issues, changing moralities, and usually clear cut good vs evil representations.

I have loved comics since a wee tot when my favorite first title was The Incredible Hulk.

I've begun to collect these books again recently, and sought out some of the newest run of titles to hit the shelves.

MARVEL

The Amazing Spider-Man vol 3, writer Dan Slott
Fantastic Four vol 5, writer James Robinson
Savage Hulk vol 1, writer Alan Davis
Silver Surfer vol 6, writer Dan Slott

DC COMICS

Sinestro vol 1, writer Cullen Bunn

Other titles I am considering,

Daredevil vol 4, writer Mark Waid
Iron Fist Living Weapon vol 1, writer Kaare Andrews
Rocket Raccoon vol 2, writer Skottie Young
Legendary Star Lord vol 1, writer Sam Humphries

I am terribly late on the new volume of Guardians of the Galaxy vol 3, writer Brian Michael Bendis and Jonathan Hickman runs on a couple of Avengers titles. Only way the earliest issues are affordable is collecting the TPBs.

This thread is to discuss all things comics!

Oh yeah, I've really gotten into comics over the past couple years ^_^

Right now I'm mainly reading The Amazing Spider-Man (written by Dan Slott) and Captain Marvel (written by Kelly Sue DeConnick).
I'm also getting caught up on The Invincible Iron Man (Mostly when Matt Fraction was writing it). Right now I'm leading up to the Fear Itself stuff. I read Marvel Now! Iron Man for a little while but I just don't like it. I don't like what's been done with the story at all and the Rings of the Mandarin story line just doesn't feel like Iron Man.

I started reading The Guardians of the Galaxy with Brian Michael Bendis but I kind of lost interest after issue 7. They keep popping up in evvveeerryyything now.

I tried reading Wonder Woman as part of The New 52 but my gosh was it weird. Lol. I might give the Justice League a try to mix some DC in too :p

I'm kind of picky -.-

Yeah, I am jumping on the Marvel bandwagon as a lot of those titles in the OP are only between 1-6 issues into their new runs. I am kinda a continuity freak in that regards.

Don Slott is penning the new Silver Surfer.

And from DC Comics basically Batman rules the coop, he has some fantastic writers such as Scott Snyder and the guy that writes for The Flash.

But Sinestro has received his first title run. I am alittle excited to read the further adventures of this bad boy from Korugar, an archvillian equally anti-hero. It would be nice to see a Black Adam title too, another archvillian equally anti-hero!

It sounds like with the upcoming movie, Marvel is shamefully milking the Guardians of the Galaxy for all it's worth. Too bad. Not sure if I am going to invest in the two solo titles, Legendary Star Lord and Rocket Raccoon.

Has any comic book made a character after Samson, the way Marvel made Thor a character?

Not that I recall personally, if there is, he must be a relatively obscure character or from an independent press or something.

There's Doc Samson, the Hulk's psychiatrist. I don't think he's really based on Samson, though. I think there was a Samson character back in the golden age or something. There's also at least one Christian chomic about Samson. I'll try to find it.

There was a comic called Mighty Samson that was published by Dell in the 60s or 70s. It was a post-apocalyptic hero. I have a few but can't remember if they were any good or not!

Here's some Marvel comics news:

SDCC 2014: Avengers NOW! | News | Marvel.com

The face of the Marvel Universe will change, all starting with the triumvirate of Avengers who represent the Mt. Rushmore of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

This fall, Steve Rogers and Thor Odinson will make way for Sam Wilson and an enigmatic female champion to assume their respective mantles, while Tony Stark’s grand vision for a superior tomorrow constitutes just as sweeping a firmware update for the man in the iron mask. Marvel Comics’ Executive Editor Tom Brevoort and Editor in Chief Axel Alonso speak to the new status quo, and the story behind the changes...

I'm going to address each of these things separately.

1. I'm okay with Sam Wilson becoming Captain America. Different characters take up popular titles pretty regularly and this is just another occurrence of that. No big deal.

2. Female Thor's a bit strange but I'm not going to automatically write it off. I just think it's weird that she's also going to be known as... Thor. Especially since the original Thor's still going to be around. That's his name, it's not a title lol. But it could be interesting.

3. Superior Iron Man... Just... no. Come on, Tony Stark was just getting back on everyone's good side after Civil War. (For the record I thought Civil War made absolutely everyone unlikable but the popular opinion is that Tony was the worst.) Why are they making him "hard to root for" again?? Uggghhh. Plus I don't like his new suit. He looks like GLaDOS from Portal in the one picture. Jeez, I didn't like what Kieron Gillen was doing with the character but this sounds worse :sigh:

So what are your thoughts?

I've been a long-time DC fan, and my father introduced me to them with his own large collection (my first comics I read were the Legion of Super-Heroes). DC lost a lot of my purchases with the New 52.... I tried to keep up on a lot of the titles but many of them just lost my interest. I do like the sound of some of their new changes, I'm hoping that their changing up of the Catwoman creative team away from Nocenti (who has massacred the character during her run and it was already in poor shape from the start of the New52). About the only comics I've been able to keep on with were in the Batman family (tried Wonder Woman but it was just too weird for my tastes, and now they have Finch doing the art in the upcoming books which makes me want to try getting back in on that even less with the way he draws women). I've enjoyed the Batman Eternal weekly series quite a bit, definitely one of the best of the Bat books. Earth 2 has been pretty decent, and I hear they're going to start a weekly book set in that, probably going to try that out.
