Hey I have any idea, you could always buy one of those childrens music CDs which put scripture to song. Tyler has one and I've learned SO much just by listening along with him. I've heard Steve Green has made a good one. I'm serious though....it might do the trick....and maybe your kids might even like it.

Just a thought.....just tell me to be quiet everyone. ;)

SISTA... PLEASE BE QUIET!

Actually it's a great idea! Of course being 11 and 8 they may find it too "childish". Are they or are there more mature sounding ones?

I never realised that when I was doing things for God it could be considered praise, but I guess it is.

I'm most concious of praising God when 'm singing in my car on the way to and from work, and when I'm singing at church. I try to dedicate my workllife to God too. Some days it feels so hard, and knowing that I'm doing it for Him makes it manageable - and makes me want to do my best.

Daily Praise

Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord,
O my soul. I will praise the Lord all my life;
I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
Psalm 146:1-2

When it comes to setting priorities in life, what could be more important than praising God? Now, it might seem that this is an unnecessary priority to mention. After all, who would dare say that we shouldn't praise God? But how often does praise for God get lost among all the requests we make of Him? How often does the praise get tlost in puddles of disappointment when He doesn't do what we think He should do?

Make it a priority to push aside all the requests, and just praise Him for who He is. Enjoy all that He does for you. Praise Him every day. Doing so will help your attitude!

What are some ways we can praise God?

We can praise God by being a good example for Him I suppose. To me that is a way to show Him honor. Along with the other things that have been metioned here like singing and dancing, ect.

Singing has been mentioned alot here... so I wanted to add another $.02... when I lift up my hands while I am singing and worshipping... it takes it to a whole new level and seems to do incredible things for me spiritually.

Mortified and horribly embarrassed...

I simply cannot bring myself to raise my hands. Yet I watch all those at church that do and think to myself... look at them; they are praising Him with all their heart and soul.

Physically speaking I'm more on the very reserved side. But I really think there's a different intensity level clearly all over the faces and energy of those who raise their hands and don't hold back.

I know how you feel, Cristianna. When I'm home alone...man, my hands practically hit the ceiling! I'm praising Him with all that I have & it feels SO good! But in church...my arms NEVER leave my side. I would just be SO embarrassed.
This was an e-mail I received today. I thought it fit our topic.
I decided there is nothing better than to enjoy food and drink and to find satisfaction in work. Then I realized that these pleasures are from the hand of God. Ecclesiastes 2:24 (NLT) We go through life and we gain assets. We buy houses, cars, food, and toys. We strive hard everyday to make something of ourselves and realize that there is nothing better than what we have. There is no greater joy than sitting on the deck with the grill going and our family playing and enjoying life. We boast of our accomplishments, degrees, and promotions as if we alone are responsible. These enjoyments and perks of life are wonderful; however, they are as empty as a glass with no water if we never realize that the reason we are so blessed is that the hand of God has provided it all. He alone is the source of our blessing and sustenance. He alone is responsible for our promotion. He alone is the creator of our children. He alone is able to bring constant joy everyday of our lives. Take an inventory of your life pleasures, then turn and realize that it is all from the hand of God. PRAISE HIM! I find it a lot easier to raise my hands if I'm with other people who do. Not many in our church do it, but some do. However, I'm usually in between my husband and my mom, neither who raise their hands, so I usually don't.
There have been times I really wanted to, and I do it, then other times, I don't.
I know I shouldn't let other people hinder me in my worship though. But sometimes I just can't bring myself to do it, if no one else is doing it.

I completely agree! For myself I find it odd. I'm not embarrassed or ashamed to state I believe in and lov God, yet I struggle to hold back when in all truthfulness I don't want to hold back.

I used to be reserved when I was young in my Christian walk... but once I learned what raising the hands really meant... I just have to no matter what church I'm in... even if I am the only one.

One paster explained all the things it meant... praises of course... submission... worship... showing the holiness of God etc.

Then someone said do you care about what people think... or about what God thinks?? From that point on I wasn't going to let fear hold back my praise and worship - so both of my hands are raised!! To raise one is not total worship, awe and submission to me. I lift both to show I am WHOLLY praising, worshipping and submitted to Him. Nothing and noone can hold back my praise. Even when I am in a "reserved" church. I wish the heavy chains could be lifted from those people so they can expierence true worship of our King.

He has done SO much for me... I show my excited love and gratitude that way.

Found some verses to share here...

Nehemiah 8:6
And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, lifting up their hands; and they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with faces to the ground.

Psalm 28:2
Hear the voice of my supplication as I cry to You for help, as I lift up my hands toward Your innermost sanctuary (the Holy of Holies).

Psalm 63:4
So will I bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name.

Psalm 119:48
My hands also will I lift up [in fervent supplication] to Your commandments, which I love, and I will meditate on Your statutes.

Psalm 134:2
Lift up your hands in holiness and to the sanctuary and bless the Lord [affectionately and gratefully praise Him]!

Lamentations 2:19
Arise [from your bed], cry out in the night, at the beginning of the watches; pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord. Lift up your hands toward Him for the lives of your young children, who faint from hunger at the head of every street.

Lamentations 3:41
Let us lift up our hearts and our hands [and then with them mount up in prayer] to God in heaven:

1 Timothy 2:8
I desire therefore that in every place men should pray, without anger or quarreling or resentment or doubt [in their minds], lifting up holy hands.

What a great subject! One of the areas that I lack is in praise. I pray to my Father, I talk to my Savior, yet what I sometimes forget, is He Is The Almighty God, The King. Being raised in this society, most American's truely don't understand what it means to be a servant to a King. We've read about it, been told about it, but never experienced it. And the same in the rest of the world. Kings nowaday are not treated the same way they were in the days of Christ or before then. Sometimes, I'm confussed about the servant role, because I don't truely understand the heart of a servant. To Praise, To Worship is a condition of the heart, of the mind, of the spirit and soul. It's a matter of knowing that God is God, and whether our prayers our requests whatever the matter is are answered, He Must Be Praised. He Must Be Honored. He Must Be, because He is God.
'Among those who approach me
I will show myself holy;
in the sight of all the people
I will be honored.' "
-Leviticus 10:3 NIV
or the NCV version says:
' I must be respected as holy by those who come near me; before all the people I must be given honor.'
To Praise is to Give Honor. I know I need to honor God more, praise Him more, in my actions, in my words, in everything I do.
David was a good example of someone who praised. He danced, he sang, he played his instrument, but most important was the state of his heart. He was the apple of Gods eye. He was mighty in the sight of the Lord, not because of what he owned, nor how he behaved, or anything like that, but because he gave God Honor in his heart, in his very soul. It doesn't mean anything if it doesn't come from the heart, remember what Jesus said, " They honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me."

Thank You Gina. This is a subject that is very important yet often forgotten.

I agree, although like some of the other ladies I just can't seem to do it at church. At home I go all out but I hold back at church. :( Sometimes...my hands will turn up in front of me (but low)....I guess I feel like I would be on display. I need to pray about this....

Burn97 said that american's don't know or understand what it means to be His servant... I will have to agree... this was my journal entry on Sept.25... it's a long one - but a real eye opener.

My eyes have really been opened just now... I was looking for a scripture to post in the post a verse thread when I came acoss Titus 2:9 AMP which says:

[Tell] bond servants to be submissive to their masters, to be pleasing and give satisfaction in every way. [Warn them] not to talk back or contradict.

Then I wondered... "what is a bond servant?" So I went to the internet and googled it... when I went into this page... wow was I shocked and humbled. For so many years I have been known as "ImHisServant" - it's my name here at CF, my e-mail address, my instant messenger name, my e-bay name, my MySpace address etc. WHAT A LIE!!! I have NEVER been His servant!!! Yes I have loved Him with all my heart... yes I go to church, yes I do bible studies, yes I pray... But after reading this - I know I am not His servant. My heart is repentant today as I realize this and I pray that from now on I will become more and more His bond-servant as He has called me to be.

Here is a copy & paste of the site which had this study... prepare yourself for the truth.

SERVANTS? - SERVANTS?
- SERVANTS?
DOWN! - DOWN! - DOWN!

Exploring a comment Jesus made about our duty and service helps us to see how lowly a position we are called to - and how you and I may have much more to learn about HUMILITY than we thought.NOTHING IS CLEARER from the New Testament than that the Lord Jesus expects us to take the low position of servants. This is not just an extra obligation, which we may or may not assume as we please. It is the very heart of that new relationship which the disciple is to take if he is to know fellowship with Christ and any degree of holiness in his life.
When we come to the New Testament, the word in the Greek for the servant of the Lord Jesus Christ is not "hired servant" - one who receives wages and has certain rights - but "bond-servant," meaning that our position is one where we have no rights and no appeal, where we are the absolute property of our Master, to be treated and disposed of just as he wishes.
The word SERVANT comes from the Greek word doulos, one bound to his master as his slave, one who was in a permanent relationship to his master, which relationship could only be broken by death, one whose will was swallowed up in the will of his master, one who served his master even to the extent that he disregarded his own interest. Further, we shall see more clearly still what our position is to be when we understand that we are to be the bond-servants of One who was himself willing to be a bond-servant.He took "the very nature of a servant" (Philippians 2:7) - without rights, willing to be treated as the will of the Father and the malice of men might decree, if only he might thereby serve men and bring them back to God.YOU AND I ARE THE BOND-SERVANTS OF HIM WHO WAS AND ALWAYS IS A BOND-SERVANT, whose disposition is ever that of humility and whose activity is ever that of humbling himself to serve his creatures.
HOW UTTERLY LOW, THEN, IS OUR TRUE POSITION!
How this shows us what it means to be ruled by the Lord Jesus!

That leads us to something further. Our servanthood to the Lord Jesus is to express itself in our servanthood to our fellows. The low position we take toward the Lord Jesus is judged by him by the low position we take in our relationship with our fellows. An unwillingness to serve others in costly, humbling ways he takes to be an unwillingness to serve him.
We are now in a position to apply all of this much more personally to our lives.
Let Luke 17:7-10 speak to your heart: "Suppose one of you had a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Would he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, "Come along now and sit down to eat"? Would he not rather say, "Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink"? Would he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, "We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty."
FIVE MARKS

I see five marks of the bond-servant.
1. He must be willing to have one thing on top of another put upon him, without any consideration being given him.
On top of a hard day in the field, the servant in the parable had immediately to prepare his master's meal, and on top that he had to wait on him at the table - and all that before he had any food himself. He just went and did it, expecting nothing else. How unwilling we are for this! How quickly there are murmurings and bitterness in our hearts when that sort of thing is expected of us. But the moment we start murmuring, we are acting as if we had rights, and a bond-servant hasn't any!
2. In doing this he must be willing not to be thanked for it.
How often we serve others, but what self-pity we have in our hearts and how bitterely we complain that they take it as a matter of course and do not thank us for it. But a bond-servant must be willing for that. Hired servants may expect something, but not bond-servants.
3. Having done all this, he must not charge the others with selfishness.
As I read the passage, I could not but feel that the master was rather selfish and inconsiderate. But there is no such charge from the bond-servant. He exists to serve the interests of his master, and the selfishness or otherwise of his master does not enter into it with him.But we? We can perhaps allow ourselves to be "put upon" by others, and are willing perhaps not to be thanked for what we do, but how in our minds we charge the other with selfishness! Yet that is not the place of a bond-servant. He is to find in the selfishness of others a further opportunity to identify himself with his Lord as the servant of all.
4. Having done all that, there is no ground for pride or self-congratulation, but we must confess that we are unworthy servants - we are of no real use to God or man in ourselves.
We must confess again and again that in our flesh, there dwelleth no good thing; that if we have acted as willing servants, it is no thanks to us, whose hearts are naturally proud and stubborn, but only to the Lord Jesus, who dwells in us and who has made us willing.
5. The bottom of self is quite knocked out by the fifth and last step - the admission that doing and bearing what we have in the way of meekness and humility, we have not done one stitch more than it was our duty to do.
God made man in the first place simply that he might be God's bond-servant. His restoration can only be, then, a restoration to the position of a bond-servant. A man has not done anything specially meritorious when he has consented to take that position, for he was created and redeemed for that very thing.
This, then, IS THE WAY OF THE CROSS. It is the way that God's lowly bond-servant first trod for us, and should not we, the bond-servants of that Bond-Servant, tread it still. Paul the Apostle, who was a bond-servant of Jesus Christ, said, "That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto His death" (Philippians 3:10).
If you really want to know what a man is really made of,
study his actions when he's under pressure.

The Apostle Paul was under a tremendous amount of pressure when he penned the above prayer (contained in his letter to the church at Philippi). These words were written in prison; Paul's very life could have been in jeopardy. He might well have been chained to a Roman guard twenty-four hours a day, loosed only for the necessities of life. Even when Paul was in prison, he never forget that he was a bond-servant to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Now what can we learn by reading this one short passage, written by the Apostle Paul in this moment of great duress? Naturally his writing was guided by the Holy Spirit. But the Holy Spirit used Paul's personality, Paul's thoughts, and Paul's emotions. So we must come back to the question, "What does a man do under pressure? How does he conduct himself? How does he act? Does he come apart at the seams?" Certainly, he will show his true colors, but what are his true colors.
The most wonderful thing about true Christianity is that it works, and particularly under pressure. And that, perhaps, is what best separates Christianity from all the philosophies, religions, which have come and gone over the centuries.
First of all, Paul never forgot that he was still a bond-servant of the Lord Jesus Christ, even though he was in prison, under pressure. Another lesson we learn is: that he doesn't seek release from prison. Isn't this strange? One would think this would be his most compelling need - yet he doesn't even mention it.
Throughout his life Paul never asked for reward, he never asked for praise. As a matter of fact, he never asked for any of the things we might consider to be available to one this close to God. Without question, Paul had God's ear and God was using him at this moment, just as God had used him throughout the greater part of his adult life.
And yet, Paul asked for none of these things. Why? Paul never forgot that he was a bond-servant of the Lord Jesus Christ, and that he had no rights. He was owned by the Master, and even while in prison, he was obligated to obey the orders of his Master. The prison guards were not his master. The authorities of the prison were not his master. His Master was still the Lord Jesus Christ. As a bond-servant, he still followed the orders of his Master. In fact, the only thing Paul asked for was:"...that I may know Him." As bond-servants of the Lord, this ought to be our cry, our prayer as well, "that we will know the Master better and more intimate, every day.
We are taught that we must bear our crosses and deny ourselves daily - by doing so, we enlarge the capacity to contain more of our Master, our Redeemer. By doing so, we become more effective as a bond-servant of our Lord.Paul could have asked for a miracle to escape the prison house, he could have asked for the divine Hand of God to comfort him, to encourage him, etc, but instead, he said that he wanted to know his Master better. As a bond-servant, he wanted a greater intimate relationship with his Master .
As a bond-servant, Paul wanted to know the power of his Resurrection and the fellowship of His suffering. May the prayer of the Apostle Paul be our prayer as well.
Down and Up

Does it seem hard and forbidding, this way down? Be assured, it is the only way up. It was the way by which the Lord Jesus reached the Throne, and it is the way by which we too reach the place of spiritual power, authority and fruitfulness.

Wow....I'm speechless....

two of us p.o.p. It not only took awhile to read all that ImHisServant posted; it's taking even longer to ingest it and decide what to write about it. It is maybe beyond words to write perhaps? I'm going to have to think about this for a bit.

Excellent, excellent post ImHisServant. We don't have a clue how to be true servants to Him, do we?

My first instinct is to say I am a servant of Jesus but when I read that devotional I don't think I am to the full extent of its meaning. I am human with selfish thoughts. I serve and serve everyone in my life all the time and sometimes selfishness seeps in and I start thinking, "what about me?". "where's my break, why can't I rest?" and on and on but I guess since I don't have any rights I shouldn't feel that way. I'm not serving nor praising God when I allow these feelings in my heart. I must decrease and He must increase.

Thank you Gina.

Wonderful Post Gina!! Thank You So Much For Sharing! Who can honestly stand and say that they are a true bond servant of the Lord? I've been reading the old testament, I'm up Leviticus now. And the thing that is sounding in my head right now, is Moses.
Moses was raised a prince. He was pampered, spoiled, he did what he wanted, when he wanted. Then, after he killed the man, he was in the desert, in the middle of nowhere basically tending sheep. What a humbling experience! But God was using that time, before He even spoke to Moses, to teach him. Moses didn't know his purpose. He didn't know that God had this wonderful Grand plan for him, all he knew was what he had lost, what he was doing now. His first son was named in grief, his grief over what he had lost..Zipporah gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom, saying, "I have become an alien in a foreign land."
Then, God speaks to him, and what does Moses do? He argues! He doesn't think he's the right person, he doesn't think others will listen to him, he doesn't.. doesn't... doesn't... that's not the defination of bond servant, the the pure defination of what we are... human. We think we know best, but we don't. We think our way is the right way, but it's not. Yet God didn't give up on him, the same way he doesn't give up on us.
As Moses continues in the Lord's Will, he slowly becomes the man God created him to be. He's no longer slow to speak, he is no longer fearful of what others think. He starts to slowly become the bondservant. He begins to put aside his own wants, his own desires, his own needs, and he does the Will of God. How amazing is that? One moment you're a selfish prince in Egypt, the next, a humble servant of God!
He still made mistakes. He couldn't go into the Holy Land because he disobeyed God, yet he was a good servant.
It amazes me at the patience God has. We see what we are now, yet God sees what we will become. Each day, each time we look to God, we're taking a step. Each time we obey Him, even though we're uncomfortable doing so, even though it takes us from our 'comfort zone' we take a step. Each time, we say, as Jesus said, ' Your will be done' we take a step. Soon we will become the people that God created us to be, something that we can't see right now. Totally amazing. Praise God!

I was just reading about those people who said they struggled with raising hands. I am one of those people at tmies - I do struggle, even though I'm in a church full of people who do it.

At the risk of sounding crazy I just wanted to share a little story. There is a place where I love to walk. It's an old battle site from the 1200s (I think - around the time of Richard the lionheart, way.) It's called Bosworth Battlefield and it's right in the heart of England, in the Leicestershire countryside. One time, I was walking there and I was convinced I heard God call me to walk part of the distance with a large stick (almost a branch) that I had found, and not only walk with it, but walk with it raised above my head.

I wasn't too sure, but I prayed to God and said, I don't know for sure whether you have asked me to do this but I will do it, and I pray that you'll be blessed by what I am doing. So I did it. Not unafraid, though. I was terrfied I would come across someone and they would accuse me of being crazy. But after a while I didn't care any more. I thought, well if God wants me to carry it then I'll carry it, and He often has good reasons for asking us to do seemingly crazy things.

Well it wasn't till later that I undersood the symbolism of the gesture when I read about (was it Moses or Elijah?) holding up a stick and causing the battle to be won and the enemy succeeding if he lowered the stick - and having peope to help him keep the stick raised high. When I read about this, my mind went straight back to the events of that day and I kind of felt myself almost leap forward spiritually.

When I learnt the symbolism of victory in battle it made perfect sense. A battle I've been fighting for a long time is fear of man and worry of what people might think. And it's this that can cause us to be reserved at times. I think it's an area I hhave been growing in - although I still worry at times, I'm not anywhere near as bad as I used to be.

Something that has just occurred to me as I have written this is that I was actually on a battlefield when this event took place, making the event even more symbolic. My middle name is Louise, which means 'mighty warrier', so maybe there is more to come. Maybe I will be a battler.

Anyway, let us all 'battle' any fear, putting God at the centre of our worship. He may ask us to raise our hands. He may not. But either way, let us be obedient to Him, forgetting all others, because it blesses Him, and we love Him.
