Tell me how this quote from Thomas Berry in The_Dream_of_the_Earth is anything close to a war on Humans: "Any progress of the human at the expense of the larger life community must ultimately lead to a diminishment of human life itself. A degraded habitat will produce degraded humans. An enhanced habitat supports an elevated mode of human. This is evident not only in economic order, but also throughout the entire range of human affairs."

They might not have to if we could switch to renewable sources of power. Seems pretty common sense to do so but the big obstacle appears to be the oil industry and it's hundreds of billions (with a b) dollars in profit. Their political lobbies are highly influential and they don't like the idea of looking at alternatives.

It is true that God wants us to take care of our world:

“God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number, fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’” Genesis 1:28.

But you people are spending a lot of time and energy in worry:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

Furthermore, God has established all authority on earth. So let them worry about it:

“Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” Romans 13:1.

Now I suppose you can cast your vote reflecting your beliefs when that time comes. But all this concern about the world by watching and feeding on the news is pointless and harmful. You set yourself up for fear, hatred, and anxiety by consuming this kind of garbage. The only thing you need to worry about are making godly decisions in your everyday life. Stop trying to control the world. That’s the Lord’s job.

I understand the sentiments, but it does not change the fact where there has been extensive ecological damage done to both humans AND animals when it comes to not seeing how to actually seeing how much is done in the name of environmentalism that both perverts true stewardship of the ennvironment - and obscures how much of a class battle it is.

Several have already spoken on this issue before when it comes to what's known as Environmental Apartheid - where you clean up in one place but you end up destroying others and only having things "clean" for those with power. Van Jones noted it best in the following:

Eco-Imperialism is a REAL issue and there's no way to avoid the way this has actually played out...as it concerns Western governments, the United Nations, environmentalist groups and various non-governmental organizations that are usurping economic and industrial progress in the Third World and keeping millions in the grip of misery and death all in the name of ecology protection and "sustainable development."

And before going further, no - plenty of people are for environmental stewardship of the environment while also recognizing how much of an issue it is politically when it comes to de-empowering other groups (especially Indigenous peoples in communities or areas) from actually having a say or a voice for how the process plays out. That is - and will ALWAYS be - an issue, especially when people saying how the environment should be handled get ignored if they feel you don't need extensive government intervention to do so. That is one way to see Life, or the days we are alloted.

But I think there is a greater purpose.

But I would think the purpose is to make a mark, not a mark that dissapears when the laser is switched off.
To be remembered for something good, not bad.
It is our job and responsibility to not only take care but also to elevate this djungel into a dwelling place fit for the king when He comes.

The advancement of society has literally skyrocketed - yet concern for how we advance has not....and thus, there's A LOT of imbalance because of where we have not found a way to live in symbiosis with the world we live in. It doesn't mean we automatically have to move out of our buildings or stop using modern inventions of science - as I support others in the scientific and technological world who've developed ways with eco-friendly environments being more realistic. Moreover, we've forgotten what Indigenous Peoples/First Nation's groups understood when it came to respecting the world we live in and choosing to intentionally live on less. Other Native American followers of Jesus have done a really amazing job on addressing that - one conference I am reminded of entitled "An American Theology of the Land" where several (i.e. Richard Twiss, Randy Woodley of the book Shalom and the Community of Creation: An Indigenous Vision , etc.) Native Americans shared on the ways that addressing the world from a theistic perspective required seeing how we are a part of it and not meant to be above it.

Although he has outlined practical ways to address global warming before in his books (such as The World We Have: A Buddhist Approach to Peace and Ecology: Easyread Large and The Blooming of a Lotus: Revised Edition of the Classic Guided Meditation ), he has still been of the mindset that nothing is permanent and there needs to be a willingness to not hold so tightly to things. Through meditation and education and acts of love one person at a time, change is a gradual process. We see that today, in countries such as Thailand and Japan, many Buddhist monks are active in Green groups.. There have been cases of others standing in the way of aggressive destruction of the environment (like these Buddhist monks in Cambodia blessing trees which are about to be destroyed to make way for a banana plantation - with the orange cloth making them sacred and used in the hopes of deterring loggers from cutting them down.

As it concerns religion, believers (at least people claiming faith in God) should always take seriously the issue of environmental stewardship. And I'm glad for others who do so - Sustainable Traditions: Home (here). Moreover, I'm very thankful for believers taking seriously the issue of what it means to "Go Green" and see it from the perspective of others who are actually making a difference with it.

One of the most inspiring examples for me will always be George Washington Carver (more shared here in #1, #20 and #45 ) - an AMAZING believer who did much to literally revolutionize the world via agriculture..with very little materials to work with many times and a system that was designed to be against him/other blacks....in regards to Jim Crow and Slavery. He did what he could with what the Lord gave him to promote the Kingdom of God - and show the miraculous...and others were amazed just as they are today with what he did despite the system. For those communities impacted the most by things that others don't deal with, going "Green" is a big deal. People like Majora Carter have done stellar work in the Bronx, which has a reputation as one of New Yorks most dangerous boroughs and one of the most polluted. Grassroots organizations like Sustainable South Bronx (SSBx) addressed both of those pressing needs with a single solution providing training and jobs that benefit the environment....as described by Majora Carter, founder of SSBx, in her "Green the Ghetto" talk. I'm thankful for the ways that the organizations B.E.S.T. (Bronx Environmental Stewardship Training) Program provides residents with training for careers in ecological restoration, landscaping, green roof installation, hazardous waste cleanup and home weatherizing. All of those things are VERY RELEVANT when considering the ways that it impacts people in the hood.

It's already sad enough that we have TOXIC Racism (i.e. placing waste in economically impoverished communities..especially minority ones and poor/rural white communities ) due to institutional discrimination...or choosing to push out communities in the event that the government finds a use for the land they live in/have chosen to adapt to. Seeking to have sustainable development/green energy is about survival rather than doing so as if it's one option amongst many. There's a significant need to address the deep/historical issues behind what keeps others from being able to grow/live healthy....including institutional systems in our government that have often fought against others seeking to grow healthy resources. The same thing goes for issues of the environment being damaged by many things which we use often (i.e. gasoline, fumes/pollution, toxic waste, run-off, etc.)

I am of the belief that it will be far easier to sell conservatives on a plan to turn deserts green as an opening gambit toward stabilization of the climate than it will be to convince them of the value of a carbon tax of some type.

Most of us conservatives are terribly unaware of why we have not yet experienced a significant rise in ocean levels in spite of all the melting that has taken place on the land based Greenland Ice Pack as well as the world's glaciers.

It is because of the huge amount of ice being added to the central region of Antarctica.

Regarding increasing ice in Antarctica:

This is not actually a big surprise.

In fact, it is completely in line with model expectations that CO2-dominated forcing will have a disproportionately large effect in the north. The reasons lie in the much larger amount of land in the northern hemisphere and the fact that the ocean’s thermal inertia and ability to mix delay any temperature signal from the ongoing absorption of heat. The local geography also plays a dominating role. The circumpolar current acts as a buffer preventing warm water from the tropics from transporting heat to the South Pole, a buffer that does not exist in the north. Does it “balance out” in the end? Not really. Sea ice in the Arctic is reaching dramatic record lows. There are other components of the cryosphere that we can look at as well, permafrost, the Greenland ice sheet, global glacier mass, and these all carry the Global Warming signal.

One must look at the balance of evidence, not just those bits one likes. And this balance is clearly in agreement with all other indicators that warming is real and rapid.

Evironmental politics are at their worst when they rely on poor people continuing to live miserably.

The first world is like a glutton who realizes that if everybody else treats the larder the same way they do, food will be depleted before they can burp - and then go on to tell the peasants that they ought to tighten their belts a few notches, while the fat guys continue to overeat.

People cite the high costs of combating pollution as a reason for abstaining from doing anything - but the long-term effects of pollution will cost us infinitely more, even if we only look at the factor of money.
Long after it became clear what a disastrous course we're maintaining, car companies invested billions in marketing to convince urban dwellers that what they needed most in their life was freaking SUVs, guzzling even more gas than ever before. So now overweight moms cruise down to the mall in hulking offroaders, wasting more non-regenerative resources than ever before.

My belief is that the threat of rising ocean levels is far far far far more serious a problem than we are being told and one of the only responses is to invest heavily in projects like the Sahara Forest Project or the Sahara Solar Breeder Project.

There are two exceptionally good images at this link that show that because the W. A. I. S. is below sea level it could crack and slide and collapse rapidly.

Which seems to fit well with what was shown to near death experiencer Howard Storm about the world economy two or three centuries in the future.

The image of the future that they gave me then, and it was their image, not one that I created, surprised me. My image had previously been sort of like Star Wars, where everything was space age, plastics, and technology.

The future that they showed me was almost no technology at all. What everybody, absolutely everybody, in this euphoric future spent most of their time doing was raising children. The chief concern of people was children, and everybody considered children to be the most precious commodity in the world.

And when a person became an adult, there was no sense of anxiety, nor hatred, nor competition.

There was this enormous sense of trust and mutual respect. If a person, in this view of the future, became disturbed, then the community of people all cared about the disturbed person falling away from the harmony of the group. Spiritually, through prayer and love, the others would elevate the afflicted person.

What people did with the rest of their time was that they gardened, with almost no physical effort. They showed me that plants, with prayer, would produce huge fruits and vegetables.

People, in unison, could control the climate of the planet through prayer. Everybody would work with mutual trust and the people would call the rain, when needed, and the sun to shine.

Animals lived with people, in harmony.

People, in this best of all worlds, weren't interested in knowledge; they were interested in wisdom. This was because they were in a position where anything they needed to know, in the knowledge category, they could receive simply through prayer. Everything, to them, was solvable. They could do anything they wanted to do.
