  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I dunno if this would work given your daughter is only 10 but when I was younger my parents would give my brother and I a fixed amount of money to do our clothes shopping, usually in the fall and then again in the spring and let us pick our own stuff. It was a good way to learn just how expensive things are and to appreciate sales more :) And to prioritize. I used to be willing to spend a lot on jeans because I found they actually lasted longer than the cheap ones but I'd buy less expensive shirts so I could have more. From my parents point of view I think they spent the same amount of money as if they "took us shopping", but it taught my brother and I the value of money a bit more.
We are going to do something like that this year, because I am planning on saving all of her child support checks for the summer to use for her school clothes. That will give her right at $1000 to get everything she needs for school, new clothes, supplies, fees, etc.

I know she wants a pair of custom Nike's that is going to be $150.00 of her money, then her supplies and school fees will be around $150.00 so that leaves her with $700.00 to get everything else she will need.

I know she doesn't need bras or underwear. We both have at least 30 of each. She likes the pink bras from VS but I can't justify replacing what she has already until she has out grown them.

Her school shirts this year have to monogrammed it is required. I know that is like $7.00 a shirt and I always want her to have at least 6 full school uniforms.

I have found that for uniforms Gap actually has the best and they are reasonable. $12.50 if you order more than one. So that leaves her plenty money to get what she needs in pants. Actually we shouldn't even have to spend all of what she has left and she can save it for something else she needs for the school year.

Wow, 6 uniforms.

I am happy if my son has 3 to wear. After all he can only wear one at a time. So I tend to end up washing on Wednesday. As it is he has 3 shirts, 2 jumpers and 2 pants, and 3 socks. No way can I afford to buy him 6 uniforms. I would have to wash Wednesday anyway, because then dd and I would run out of clothes as well.

I have a lot of health problems. I have 3 herniated disc in my neck. I have two that are sticking out in my lower back, one that is ruptured and degenatrive disc disease. There are days that I literally can not hold my head up. Then there are days that the disc in my neck will push on my spinal cord and I can't feel my arms or hands.

Then I am always throwing up blood so I am in bed for that almost weekly. So, we have clothes we don't need because of this. There are days that I just can't get up to do laundry or anything else for that matter.

I also work outside of the home, with drive time it is at least 8.5 to 10 hours a day.

So my Taylor time is very precious to me, much more special than washing clothes. For that reason we have extra clothes.

Today is one of those arm days. I can't feel my left arm from my shoulder down today.

Blimey 6 uniforms! Kirsty wears uniforms everyday, she has 3 white shirts, 2 skirts, a school tie and 2 school jumpers. For the summer she has 2 school dresses, one on and one in the wash!

Then I think it's time for Taylor to learn how to do her own laundry.

I can appreciate your problems, really I do, but why on earth can your daughter not get clothes out of the machine or the drier? I work fulltime, but Kirsty still has her chores to do, my time with her is precious too.

Yeah 6. If something happens when you are getting dressed, like you spill your breakfast down the front of your clothes you need something else to put on.

I realize what works for us doesn't work for everyone.

Please, I am not putting you down honest I am not. I get across the problem of spilling by Kirsty not getting dressed til she has had breakfast.

Our morning routine goes like this.

7.45 I wake her up and she comes downstairs

7.55 Breafast, usually a bowl of cereal and fruit juice or milk.

8.10 She goes and washes her face and cleans her teeth.

8.20 Upstairs to get dressed

8.30 Hair brushed and I put it up for her.

8.45 off to school.

I'm sorry, I'm not a parent, but I like to lurk over here because I figure its good to learn things about parenting before I actually have kids, so I know what I'm in for :) I don't understand why everyone has such an issue with Taylor having 6 uniforms? If Laurie can afford them and that's what she wants to do, why does it matter? Its just a matter of convenience. You aren't spoiling a child by giving them uniforms, they are just uniforms! I wore one for 4 years, between grade 5-8, and its not like you feel better than someone else for having a higher number of the exact same outfit as someone else.

Sorry...I just don't get it. Maybe because I'm not a parent? Anyways Laurie I hope you find something that works for you :) And regarding giving away clothes, I always give mine to my church, they have a program to give clothes away to lower income families in the city.

You know, I also do not see the problem with having 6 uniforms. I find that even buying high quality clothes, constant weekly washing can add a lot of wear and tear to a uniform, so 6 can help stretch that. My kids do not wear uniforms but they have about 10 different outfits they can mix and match to choose from.

As for my children doing their own laundry—neither my 9 or 11 year old and reach down to the bottom of the washer to get all the clothes out of it. (I do make them help me fold and put away their clothes, though.)

I'm not sure anybody is actually unhappy with the number of uniforms, just surprised?

Oh ok. I must just be misreading 'tones'...the problem with anything online :) To me it seemed like a couple posters were being critical but I may just be a bit spaced out today and misinterpreting it. I apologize for any confusion on my part.

Well, I am at work at 7am, I am just using that as an example. There are times she has spilt something. There are times she has gotten deoderant all over her shirt and toothpaste. Accidents happen.

Plus like someone said it does keep the wear and tear down.

During ball season we are gone 4 nights a week, then there is church one night a week. Cheerleading season (football season) is three nights a week plus church one night.

When exactly during the week if I am feeling like washing am I supposed to wash???

Ifr I was in your situation,. I would put the washing on overnight as I do at the moment. I put the machine on timer and it is done when I get up, I then either hang it out or put it on the clothes horse (I don't have a drier). I iron twice a week, on a Wednesday night between 9 and 11pm and a Sunday night. I also do the laundry for my parents at the same time.

I guess I have just fallen into a routine taught by my mum and I have kept to it.

I really didn't want my words to come across as criticism, I will bow out now. I am sorry

I am not at all upset because of your post. I am not physically able to do laundry all the time. Today I had almost no feeling on my left side. So, housework and clothes were no where in my list of things to do today.

Your washer has a timer? That is awesome.

BecM Taylor isn't messy, she is good with her clothes but just in case I always want at least two days worth clean.

My washer doesn't have a timer, it is one that I plug the washer into, like on a lamp or something. I set it to come on at 6am and it is done when I get up at 7am.
