Not really....for the hundreds of babies that die from complications (in the US anyway). I'm sure there are thousands dying in Africa. Not to mention the many many more that are permanently disfigured.
How awful would you feel if you just consented to ELECTIVE surgery on your perfectly healthy newborn baby- and he died? Even if the chance is low...why take it at all? Wait till he's old enough to decide if he wants to remove his body parts.
As for why the NT changed its position on Jewish law-
Just imagine you are Paul, trying to convert all those adult male gentiles. Your minions you sent to them start preaching that they must cut off part of their genitals for this new god. What?!!! This is a most unpopular requirement! Nearly all of them refuse. So Paul changes the rule and everyone is much happier!!

Paul had some decent marketing strategies. I would bet that had circumcision remained a requirement, Christianity would be another lost ancient cult today.
