  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Christmas things that we like.

Well if one of the Miser brothers was gay, my bet is on Heat Miser. He was the flaming one after all.

That was terrific! There is a house in our neighborhood that has the lights set to music...Carol the Bells...it was so much fun to watch!

We usually drive around every Christmas Eve looking at the lights...we have another neighbor who couldn't put another decoration out if they tried...and they open their home for people to come in a see just as many decorations indoors as they have outdoors....:)

I like that one of the local church's puts out a nativity scene right next to the main intersection!

I like colin buchannan's christmas songs for my kids (he's an aussie)
can't beat his lyrics:

"Let the Christmas tree remind you of the one who trusts the Lord
Walks the path of godliness and loves to hear God's word
Pray that as you grow up, that's just how you will be
Standing tall for Jesus like a Christmas tree..."

lol! My DD deciding to take part in the christmas play at church  - she's 3.5y/o normally very shy, especially in front of people. She refused to dress up though - apart from a tinsel halo, DH said 'that's my girl, non conformist' - lol! Awwww... Good thing I put her in a cute, semi-white dress anyway! Soooooooo adorable!

It's not the house that is in the video in the OP, is it? That one is set to the same song, and I love it!

GM, do you have a live tree?

We don't have one up, yet. We were going to get one yesterday, cuz my daughter had half a day of school, but a winter storm started passing through and it was rainy and icing, and we didn't want to stand out in the rain looking for trees. I guess we will have to wait till next week since my hubby is heading out for work today.

Hey you already have presents there...
Ooh, tis much better now. Now there are lots under the actual tree for family. We've invited homeless people and people without anyone to come for Christmas (no-one should spend Christmas alone :(), and those are presents for our guests. The paper under the tree is all sparkly and reflects the lights. That's happy-making, too, but I didn't want to sound like the presents are the important bit :sorry:

Yeppers, tis very much live! :) The thought of having a dead tree is really sad. Silly, really. But watching it die after it's been so lovely and friendly during Christmas is like watching a friend die. Hate it. So it'll be planted in the garden after Christmas

Are you looking forward to getting your tree? I always think Christmas really begins it's in the house all sparkled up and happy :D

Why don't you like Christmas, Jimminy? Does it not make you fizzy, at all?

Not at all~I used to enjoy the season as a kid; later after I left home and was in military I found out that every year my parents would go into debt for Christmas and then spend the rest of the year paying it off only to cycle into it again, and then eventually with other financial issues kept going deeper and deeper into debt. That has soured the entire "holiday" thing~and as I walk through stores and listed to people at church it seems that many do what my folks did. I've not followed in my parents steps, I've not created some fakey mysterious hollow holiday thing. My boys know I get them some presents and it's just not much more than that. It aggravates my wife to no end~I only wish Advent was at a different time of year, "Christmas" could be left as a secular/civic holiday of "presents and good cheer"...there's my scrooge speech:cool:

It's not Scrooge-like - it's how you feel. But I wish I could send you some of my excitement. I used to be too cynical (not the same as you, I know ) to enjoy it and poured scorn on it all and thought I was being cool... but enjoying the tree, and early nights and twinkly Christmas lights and mulled wine and people being a little quicker to smiling - it all makes for such a pure sort of happiness that totally isn't based on money or stuff.

But I understand what you're saying, and why you feel the way you do.
