hm.... In general I think it is a bad idea for Christians to watch movies or play games involving witchcraft. It is bad for your mind and your spirit.

Unfortunately there's a fine line between that and innocent story-telling--Narnia, for example, uses some "magic" but is accepted in mainstream christianity for its biblical values... Tolkien is another one. Why do we accept Narnia and reject Harry Potter? Is it because of the Christian analogy in the Narnia books? It's hard to say... and I'll have to think about that some more. But I do agree with you that we need to be very careful to abstain from things that will corrupt our minds or pull us away from what is good, right, true, and lovely.

What do the Scriptures say that we are to be?

1 Peter 1:16 ASV

because it is written, Ye shall be holy; for I am holy.

We must be holy because He who has called through His word (Romans 10:17) to be His children is holy.

So, really, what we should probably discuss is "What does it mean to be holy as God is holy?"

What do you all think?

The eyes are the windows of the sould. What you watch has an impact on what your mind thinks about. You think about the things you see-plain and simple. Does that mean I don't watch CSI or Lord of the Rings? not at all. But I've gone without TV for 30 days, only reading the Bible and listening to teaching tapes and found that I walked much closer with God and my thoughts were only on the Word and everything I experienced brought scriptures to my mind. It is a wonderful thing and I would recommend everyone trying it.

I've done that before too... put the tv in a closet and worked on memorizing scripture... I would like to do that again for awhile but it's harder now because I have roommates who also watch tv... so I have to be more creative about avoiding it. Then I would also need to limit my time spent online too, since I while away many hours in forums like this one. :p

I agree 100%. A couple of years ago I was not able to watch tv because I was working where there was none. When I came home after about a month, I was shocked. The things that I normally was hardened to and watched regularly I couldn't bare anymore. Now we have 4 local channels and occassionally watch movies. My wife is slowly coming off tv, I'm being patient with her because I know how strong the addiction is. There are "some" ok things on tv, but I ask everyone this, if Jesus was sitting on the couch with you(which He is) would you still watch what you watch?

With love in Christ

One word: Fiction.
Is porno fiction? They are real people.

Whether it is porno or lying, those who watch it are still taking pleasure in it. That is what watching tv is all about right, taking pleasure in what you watch.

The most common excuse I've heard is "hey, it's just real life, we deal with it every day you can't shelter yourself".

My response, Yes I do deal with it every day, but I don't bring it into my living room and take pleasure in it.

Here is my thoughts:

Be excellent at what is good, be innocent of evil.

Well, that's not really MY thought, but one additional thought is that we have a hard time taking something serious that we find amusing. That's why TV influences our culture so much, but that may be another topic.

well i mean tv movies music even books can draw you into things you shouldent be into lets take for example Horror movies . if your a christian and watch those things then i dont know i try not to watch anything with over a PG rate sometimes i will watch pg13 i still like court shows and cops etc

It is perfectly commendable and desirable to protect your mind from bad, unhealthy, ungodly influences. I agree about horror movies, but may not be as strict as you are on some of the other things... be careful about expecting everyone to have the same convictions as you do in grey areas.

Newsboy - I'm finding that the Holy Spirit keeps me on a curb chain as far as movies and TV shows that are OK for me to watch and books that are OK for me to read so I understand what you are saying. I used to love horror movies and books and can't abide them now. I do like Frank Peretti's spiritual warfare Christian fiction - it's better than secular horror and Christian to boot. Also, I can only listen to Christian music now. Even classical reminds me of the days I supported PBS with my time and $$ instead of church!

I personally do not understand Christians who continue to read and watch what they did as non-Christians. Nor do I understand the mixture of magic with Christianity - one of them would have to take a back seat to the other.

the only movie i plan to see Rated R soon is The Passion Of Christ when it comes out here in town

Me too. Movies are a real problem. Most movies are rated on sex and language, so I go see movies with my 4 and 6 year old great niece and nephew. Most of those are OK to pretty good. But I don't think that I could go without the cover of preschoolers! :D

I have less of a problem inside with violence, but it can't be cruel violence, if that makes any sense. I.e. LOTR battles were OK with me.
