Hello,

I can tell you briefly what I view of it. Regarding Genesis accounts, Adam and Eve were created as the first two people ever. Though, there is a large number of Christians who would read that as being a metaphoric story, and who also claim to believe evolution too. Personally, I do not read that as being the intention of the writings. Either way, truths can be gained from considering the Genesis accounts.

One thing that I am sure all Christians should agree about, is Abraham was a real man. From Abraham came Jacob, and Jacob had twelve sons. One of these was Joseph, who was betrayed by his brothers and sold as a slave to Egypt. In Egypt, his faith with God caused him to be promoted to a high position, then in a time of famine, his brothers went to Egypt to purchase grains and not recognising him though he recognised them, he invited them to live in Egypt. Jacob's lineage is referred to as "Israel" - all collective descendents of his twelve sons. You should read Exodus chapter one and two, which explains how Moses came to be known by Egyptian leaders. Moses one day saw one of the Egyptian masters beating his own kind (because although he was raised by the Egyptians, he knew he was Hebrew), and he killed the Egyptian while thinking he would not be seen. But it was discovered, and he fled Egypt. Then a while later God called him to service, where he represented God before Pharoah and forced Pharoah to release Israel. Then Israel after spending forty years in wilderness, was led into the promised land with God's blessing, to displace the existing inhabitants and make it their home, intending that it should be the holy land where God's people dwell, and from their obedience to Him, the whole world would recognise His true nature and likewise come to live in a holy way - that the world would overcome sin. The prophecies stated that a man annointed by God would rule Israel and during this time, the earth would be restored to a holy state, and after that time, the earth will remain holy. However, when Jesus came, having God's annointment in spirit, as Messiah for that purpose, the religious leaders had become strongly of the opinion that they were doing things according to God's instruction in the scriptures, that when they saw what Jesus was bringing (humility, love, suffering, mercy - all that is truly the holiness of God), they found it was so contrary to their understanding of God's way, that when He claimed to be representing God, they called Him a blasphemer. Seeing as they were so offended by His disapproval of them, they had Him killed on the charge of blasphemy, as they had come to believe Him guilty of this. However, seeing as this was absolute proof that the religious leaders had abandoned God's way and had gone so far as to reject the spirit of holiness, God established a new covenant in Jesus' name. This covenant has become equally available to all people, whether Hebrew or other, and provided that a person does accept Jesus as being God's holy annointed and most worthy of obedience, honour and glory, then those who desire to serve Him may be saved. The salvation is achieved by a person who one day recognises that they are a sinner, and that they live in a way that can never sustain perfect paradise conditions, then they realise that living God's way is to live in a way that earth can be paradise for everyone. Such a person resolves that they will actively listen to God's instruction in their life, so that as they go through life, they will continue to learn how to become more and more of the person that He needs them to be. A person who lives a repentant life, does not only decide one day to repent and follow a set of rules, but to go forward for the rest of their lives always repenting when necessary and living to maintain a good conscience with God, so that they can be confident when they come to face Him, that He will accept them. If a person (whether Christian or not) begins to live in a way that causes their conscience to testify against them and what they have learned of God's desire for them, then they do not have that confidence and they are not living to satisfy their spiritual needs, but they are living to satisfy their carnal needs. It is typical to see people who are living in that condition to also be talking about God as though they have something valuable to offer. But St. Paul writes that the ones who are being made holy are perfect for His service, and that when a member of the brethren is found to be in sin, the ones who are of good spiritual condition should restore him.

I do not have information for question 3. Probably Wikipedia would be a good place to look :)

I would quite like to know more about your background. How have you come to be asking these questions?

Bible Christianity is not a "religion" per se. Start with the New Testament and that will give you a pretty good idea. Christianity is Christ.

Very good! We're happy to have your questions, although my first reaction is to suggest just getting one of the many histories of Christianity available at the local bookstore or public library. It's such a big topic, you know. Nevertheless, I'll give my answer to your questions here.

1. The religion is an extension of the ancient Hebrew religion that taught the coming of a Messiah, a redeeming leader. We believe that Jesus of Nazareth is that Messiah, that he is God himself, and that his life among men and teachings--which we have recorded in the Bible--are our guide. Shortly after his crucifixion, his followers spread throughout the Roman world, bringing the new faith to those peoples, and from there, in time, it was spread to the whole world.

2. Christians normally practice their faith in their personal behavior and also through group worship in churches. Featured are instruction in the Scriptures (the sermon), praise (singing), prayer, and observing the "Holy Meal" (Communion) which Jesus instituted just before his death on the cross.

3. Christianity is the largest religion in the world and has adherents in just about every country in the world. At the present, it is growing fastest in Africa and the Far East. To the extent that Western Civilization has been the most influential cultural force in world history, and Christianity has been the most significant contributor to its values, I would say that Christianity has been monumentally influential.

:)

1) The history of Christianity is long and rather complicated, it'd be nearly impossible to adequately answer this in a forum post. When I talk to people who want to learn about Church history there are two books that I recommend (mostly because they are the two that got me interested in learning more about the history of the faith).

The first is The Story of Christianity by Justo L. Gonzales.
The second is Church History in Plain Language by Dr. Bruce Shelly

The only downside I believe with these is they focus more on the history of Western Christianity, for a more thorough look at the history of Eastern Christianity I recommend The Orthodox Church by Bishop Kallistos Ware.

2) How Christians practice Christianity largely is going to be answered differently depending on the Christian in question. Christianity broadly can be divided as follows:

Western Christianity - Catholics, Protestants, and Anglicans
Eastern Christianity - Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and the other Eastern Churches.

Protestantism includes a very wide array of denominations, too many to list here. Some examples however include: Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, Baptists, Pentecostals, Charismatics, Non-Denominationals, Calvary Chapel, Seventh-Day Adventists, Vineyard churches, Mennonites, the Amish, Plymouth Brethren, Moravians, etc.

Protestant denominations can vary in beliefs and practices quite strongly. Lutherans, for example, have far more in common with Catholics than they do Baptists, Pentecostals, or Seventh-Day Adventists.

The reasons for these differences are rather complex, though many of those reasons are answered by studying the history of Christianity.

3) The last statistic I saw placed the global Christian population at around 2.2 billion. The majority of the world's Christians live in Latin America, Europe, and Africa, followed by Asia, North America, and Oceania. But then that can be broken down by nation, which then of course would be pretty extensive. Though if curious, Wikipedia lists the top 20 nations whose populations are, by percentage, the most Christian. As far as influence goes, that largely depends on what is meant by influence.
