Mental illness is sin by definition. As a rule of thumb, only if you don't have the mind of Christ you can be mentally ill. Although there is the odd exception like if you suffer brain damage as a result of an accident or there may be the odd disease that damages brain cells (Alzheimers may be one of them although I'm not 100% sure).

um...wow...that has got to be a first...

I think the point that's being missed here is that we, as sinners, are sinful through and through, there's nothing to redeem us in and of ourselves. Paul quoted the OT in Romans "No one does good". So without God's grace to save us, we'd be doomed, regardless of whether this is a sin or that is a sin:scratch: , that's really beside the point. Especially in this thread, since the topic has to do with salvation. Now, recognizing sin in ourlives is good, but that's part of sanctification.

Depression is a sin like being an alcoholic, a smoker, having a drug addiction, being a homosexual etc. I don't believe it's genetic.
There can be hormones or chemical imbalances, that's for sure, but they are caused by a sinful soul.

How gratifying to hear the voice of tender compassion. What Christian should not be completely at ease and satisfied in their knowledge that the sufferings of others are justified because of their sins?

Great post, that's another valid reason for suffering,
in addition to the ones I already mentioned.

What good, well versed Christian would hestiate before declaring the beauty and value of suffering for everybody else? Suffering is God's merciless way of teaching you to love Him. Jesus Christ must have been sinning to suffer as He did.

I do not recall that Jesus was whipped, tortured, and brutally
executed by being nailed to a wooden cross and leaving His faithful with the admonition that they all really need to suffer just like Him.

This infers that Jesus Christ was setting the example of the value of suffering to acknowlege God. Question is, how did the Saviour's suffering teach Him any more about God?

OK, from what I have seen so far on this thread, is that it's pretty much split between those who say they will burn in the lake of fire, and those that say the Lord will forgive them. Let me give you an incident of suicide that ought to trigger your thoughts, and let me know if you still stand behind your decisions.

"I'm leading my squad of Marines on patrol one day. Our point man, PFC Knucklehead, spots a platoon of the enemy ahead. We splilt up and set up an ambush for them. Once they are in range, we open fire on them. Next to me are my radio man, navigation man, and the corpsmen. All of a sudden, a grenade rolls into our area. The Navigator jumps on the grenade, thereby committing suicide in the act, but saves 3 other people from death. Will God send him to Hell for such a "damning" act, even this was suicide, and he made the decision to kill himself?"

No, I do not believe the Lord will send someone to Hell, simply because they committed suicide. Not one verse in the Bible says that one sin after repentence will be unforgiveable, nor is it any indication of that. So, if you are having sex outside of marriage and you have a heart attack and die, do you go to hell, simply because you were engaged in a sinful act, one of which is to bring self pleasure and is not in keeping with the Law of the 10 Commandments? Just a little food for thought.

I do not believe that he committed suicide here. He laid down his life for his comrades. Christ said "Greater Love has no man in that he lay down his life for a friend" To say that this was a suicide is to demean the soldiers sacrifice.
