I think in a sense we are united. There is a lot we can all agree on. The differences are slight but because of the way different theology and forms of worship are played out things appear to be more different than they are.
I agree. I think unity is made apparant when we can acknowledge and accept our differences, love and value each other regardless, and keep our hearts focussed on what we all share in common, which is the love of our Lord, and the desire to make his love known in the world. It's like a family - everyone is different, and everyone has their unique role to play, but the family is still a unit.

How do we know if we have arrived? We have arrived. We just don't all know it yet.

I like the analogy of a family - there can be some pretty big fights, but blood is (almost always) thicker than water, thank goodness!

Superficially there is a lot of strife though, and that makes me really sad. My experience has been (and perhaps I've been unlucky) that people usually start any inter-denominational discussions with the assumption that they are right, and it is their job to convince the other party to change their misguided ways. Obviously that's not a very helpful starting point, esp. when both parties feel that way!

I have been an active member of churches as different as Roman Catholic and Free Evangelical / Assemblies of God and my opinion, humbly offered, is that everyone has somehting to learn from everyone else - precisely in the areas highlighted by Jamza above.

Long live ecumenism! Although all that doesn't really answer the original question - sorry!

Baby crying, gotta go!

Bless you all, whatever denomination you are!

There is absolutely nothing I can add to this post. If we Christians had a grain of sense, it would be carved in marble and placed in front of every church in the world. Please continue on your path to the priesthood Karen. You clearly have so much to offer. We need you!

What is it, exactly? How do we know if we are making progress? How will we know if we have arrived?
As someone else said, I think we ARE there but haven't realized it. We're bound together by our baptism in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
