Music is a very personal thing and is also conditioned by cultural and
historical factors and therefore to prescribe and impose one kind of music over
others to people is not a wise thing especially when one has not taken into
account the many facets that make up the appreciation and understanding of
music.
Christian music has evolved over the years. The music that was used in all the
different centuries have changed and therefore it is quite ridiculous for anyone
to talk of going back to good old gospel music because the question will
certainly arise which era do you want to go back to?
The important things however to consider when using and deciding the choice of
music is that the content of the words and lyrics must be biblical and not
violate any doctrinal teachings. Secondly the expression of music must bring
the listeners and worshippers heavenward, lifting them to a closer experience
with God and for this reason the focus must never be on the performers. Special
music is to make God special not the performers!
I end by saying that we must learn not to be too judgmental and condemnatory
when encountered with expressions of music that is unfamiliar to our own
experience. Keep an open mind but at the same time be critical so as to ensure
that our truths are not compromised.
