  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

There is the sin that comes from drinking. When your inhibitions are lowered you are much more willing to break laws, both the state's and God's.
I think a better way to state it is the sin that comes from being drunk, not from drinking. I, personally, can drink two high point beers and still have no problem doing everything. But, everyone has a different level. If you're at the point where your inhibitions are lower, that's when you should stop.

I do think that the survey needs an additional choice of "in moderation." The choice of "small amounts are fine" implies, to me at least, a single glass of wine or a single beer. The choice of "as much as they want" could allow drinking to the point of death. The choice of "in moderation," which would vary from individual to individual depending on such factors as body size, food consumption, etc., should be between the other two choices.
I agree that an additional choice should be there. Moderation, to me, is drinking as much as I want (so I chose that one). But, as much as someone else wants could mean getting drunk.

This is something I battle with often, Im fond of having a drink or two. I went without a drink for a whole eight months bit since my girlfriend left me Ive needed a lot of prayer and the odd Guinness or JD to numb the pain. Sometimes I feel that Im sinning the next I tell myself Im ok to have a couple as long as I dont get drunk (which I often dont) - Dons anyone else have the same problem???? :help:

1 Corinthians 6
19Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

I dont think having the odd drink is abusing the our bodies as long as we dont do it George Best style I think we will be fine.

John 2
3When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine......... 7Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. 8Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." 9They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.

I dont think Jesus would have done this if he thought it was a sin!

I don't see why not. I mean, it tastes good, it's been proven to help your digestive system (especially in digesting those calories and hard, heavy red meats), and, as some people have pointed out, the bible condones the drinking of wine (but not the getting drunk; which you can have a drink and not get drunk, y'know).

I enoy a glass of wine occasionally or a after dinner cocktail. I believe that getting drunk is stupid and wrong, but a nice drink, can make a dinner more of a celebration.

As has been pointed out, Paul recommended it to Timothy and Jesus turned water into wine, If we cant trust Paul and Jesus, who can we trust.

I would caution though, that it would also depend on whom you were with. If I was with someone who had been or was an alcholic I would not have a drink.

My daughter was married this spring, and we debated this subject quite a bit before we made the decision to have a champagne toast but no other drinks. She later attended her girlfriends wedding this summer, and said she was glad that we had done things the way we did. Her girlfriends reception was rather spoiled because of some of the behavior of some of the guests who became drunk.

I think that it can affect different people in different ways. Personally speaking, I can get drunk and all it does to me is make me happier and more fun to be around. But I also know some people that get very....'loose'....and even some more that just get violent. It just seems to me that if you live your life, while sober, with christian morals, you would have to be VERY intoxicated to ignore them drunk.

Galations 5: 19-22
Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Romans 14
21 It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother stumbles.

My husband and I have an occasional drink at dinner and see nothing sinful about it. But, if I'm around a friend or family member that does not believe in drinking, I will not drink because it could offend them and we are not to offend our brothers and sisters in Christ or if I'm around someone with a drinking problem, I won't drink.

If drinking becomes a way of life or something I just can't live without or something I must have to have a good time, then something is wrong. I believe the same thing many posters stated: moderation is key. We also need to remember that our body is the temple of God and needs to be clean for him.

Even though the human body is not designed to ingest alcohol, have a read of your Bible as to what it says about drinking.

We are to drink moderately, or not drink in the presence of someone weak in faith. I'm no fan of the demon drink myself. but I enjoy having wine with dinner or a couple of scotches and coke when out on the tiles.

I haven't been drunk since 1993, and I'm glad that I don't now. Abuse of alcohol causes one to lose their judgment and sense of responsibility.

Of course it was alcoholic. There was no refrigeration in those days and hence no way to preserve grape juice without fermenting it.

In addition, you need only read further in the chapter to know that the wine was alcoholic: The master of the banquet tells the bridegroom "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink, but you have saved the best till now." This would make no sense if the wine was non-alcoholic.

Maybe people should do a little historical work on different cultures before they approach the Bible with their presuppositions based on what some fundamentalist preachers have lied to them about.
