  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

True, but fundies are supposed to take the bible literally, and Bible commands people to drink, but have limits.
That's where their "literalism" fails, because it imposes false presuppositions upon the text. They don't want people to drink, so they twist the Bible to make it say what they want it to say. And, sadly, the majority of Christians don't actually read their own Bibles, and live vicariously through whoever makes them feel better.

We are planning a wedding at our Lutheran church and might have the reception in the fellowship hall. We are allowed to have cocktails, beer, wine, whatever. We use wine for Communion, too.

Drinking too much alcohol is akin to eating too much food. We really shouldn't abuse our bodies in those ways.

The Bible never says that drinking alcohol is a sin, no matter what anyone may tell you. The points made about alcohol illustrate that drinking is a "slippery slope" and a really bad idea. I am a literalist (but not a hyper-literalist, and there IS a difference) and the scipture does NOT say that drinking is a sin. People who say this may be well-intentioned but their claims are based on inferences made in regard to the Bible's many warnings about the dangers of indulgence in alcohol. Points can be made, but the scripture needs to be studied as a WHOLE WORK, not a random collection of bits and pieces to be used to support your own viewpoint. BTW, the "new wine" argument is put to bed by Acts 2:13-15. Read the Word with an open heart and an open mind folks. If you study the book from cover to cover it interprets itself!
Just for the information of anyone who might care, I used to drink profusely for years, but quit when I read Romans 14:21.

"Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery." Ephesians 5:18 (NIV)

It doesn't say don't drink wine. So, the fact that Jesus drank wine is irrelevant. He didn't get drunk. And this verse solidifies what many people have said already - getting drunk is a good way for you to end up doing something you shouldnt do.
So, go ahead and drink, but i think ephesians is clear on having too much.

This verse is in the new testament, the section of the bible that most of Christianity is based on. If you think a christian can ignore this verse, what do they base their christianity on?
