We are saved by grace, not doctrine. There is no wrong belief that we can hold that can stop us being saved if it is God who is saving us.

I've never quite understood the differences in the different sects of christianity, and I've always had a habit of confusing myself over them. So, if there are any out there who can help explain them to me, I'd be very much appreciative.

Er, there's all these people, and they like God lots, but they argue a lot over the details.

I think you'd have to make your question more specific, although you've gotten some good answers covering church history.
