Actually, I was more than a little disappointed
with my experience, inside this, Catholic Church

I have-to admit that I had expected reverence for the venue
that I also expected the congregation to join-in the hymn singing
and that the fact, that the Bishop of Salford was presiding over this event
fact: It was, the very first confirmation service in Salford of, this year
should, I would have thought, have provided for a solemn service
concerned-with the giving of the gift of the Holy Spirit to the children

I guess, I came-away with the conviction
that it was full of pretentiousness and hypocrisy

I could hear 'myself' singing Psalm 23 with the choir
who were ensconced in a balcony at the rear of the church
whilst the congregation
numbering some 300-400 adults, plus their children, were silent
or, were certainly unheard, by me

Afterwards we were invited to a Buffet in a hall attached to the church [?]
where, I found a licensed bar [the licence owned by the priest]
and by the time the family slpit up to go home I heard several of the parents
speaking in slurred manner
Even the priest enjoyed several glasses of 'tipple'
and, cuddled many young children in a manner which made me shudder
given, my own, earlier experience as a child

My sole consolation, is, that God, was also a witness

I am sorry for your experiences of past and present; your expectations and past has obviously affected the present.

That is not MY experience as a cradle Catholic, and I do not wish to engage in such discussions, as it is subjective and biased on both sides.

I do UNDERSTAND Sis'

I did however 'expect' MORE... but, so-much, seemed not to be 'there'

and I do hope that I have adequately described
my first 'church-attendance' experience, in a long while
and confirms to me, WHY... I dont attend church
when the congregation is there, only to be seen, to be there
and that the priests cater-for this just gives me an irk

your Bro'

Your sleep article was interesting Dave...I have trouble sleeping...have for a long time...it is much better but still have many nights of poor sleep...then when I get to sleep I don't wake up at the time I usually like to be up...which is early. I have just learned to adjust to it and go with the flow.

I am getting ready to do my routine cleaning...think I am getting lazy about this at times...then I get a stinging bite and that gives me motivation to clean the "clean".

Happy weekend to all of you...

I'm sorry about your experiences Dave...but your sharing this has helped me to get to know you.

I am an ex- catholic myself...for theological reasons. But I had some very unsettling experiences in Protestant (?)churches too. Sound doctrine is restoring my soul...

Please understand... that I was not
referring 'badly' to the Catholic Church as a whole
but, to this single-experience

I attended Sunday School at a Church of England church as a child
and ALWAYS considered myself to be a christian
and, just as there are several 'schools' of christian
I do not JUDGE 'differences' between them

One God - Many Churches

but that, evening service, seemed to be more about WHO was there
rather-than the purpose of providing confirmation to the children
But there was no joyful singing from the congregation
and, had I known
there was going-to be a p***-up afterwards
I would have declined the invitation [?]

I did, take the opportunity, of seeing the three girls together
to pass them their tooth-fairy pots, and they, were delighted

I do understand Dave...but I have very definite theological views these days...yet, hopefully enough brokeness to wait on the Lord to pray as how to share them...our threads here are not about theology...but fellowship.:angel:

I think it is healthy to express our views and experiences. It helps us to get to know each other better and as long as we do it with respect for others realizing we all come from different backgrounds and religions I think we all can benefit.
