  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why does light Chat feel so Heavy?
It feels like a bubbly, teenage girl
With a lot of pep, and a lot of energy!

It does not feel "light", At all!!

And it's certainly not boring, either! It's the opposite of that!!

Anyway, for me energetic chit chat that is supposedly light, Feels like the heaviest thing in the world!!

Hi TBH! So that I can gain some clarity, is what you're asking here pertaining as to why 'small talk' can feel like a burden?

Or did you have another nuance in mind about the psychological intricacies of communicating more generally?

Well, i have bipolar 1 with mania, So i cant take uppers, I have to take sedatives and stuff..

The more sleep I get, the heavier I feel but that deep, Sloth like feel is relaxing and allows me to think more clearly..!

Fast, cheerleader like, lighthearted chit chat startles me, and feels like a jolt of caffeine

So, it feels "Heavy", I'm not sure I'm using the right words.

Not a craver of excitement. It must be a shot of adrenaline everytime somebody says something, to wake up. It’s a shame I guess but the sacrifices we make to be sane. It’s just like normal but slowed down a bit.

Actually, that makes sense to me. But I'm not a mental health practitioner and I'm not sure that Christian Philosophy is the place to discuss this topic. It's an important topic, but it'd probably be best to be addressed by your doctor. There's also a more general forum area for threads pertaining to mental health here on Christian Forums. You might ask to have this thread moved there, Sister TBH.

I am more tying in in how my disorder is actually more in common with a common misperception of how emotions, and sleep is perceived.. Rather than making this about my illness.

Like, when you are sad you feel a wide range of emotions, and when you are happy your mind is just kind of a blank!

Ok. That's understandable. Sleep deprivation from whatever set of causes can be debilitating.

Yes, that is a challenge to deal with, I'm sure. One would hope that moments of happiness would instead bring a saturation of good thoughts rather than perceptions and feelings of blankness. I hope your doctor is trying to get to the bottom of why you're feeling this way.

I think it is called light chat because it is not supposed to be about serious topics. It isn't in reference to how it makes a person feel. I have noticed that in the chat box, you tend to talk about more serious things. Those aren't supposed to be talked about there, because serious topics are not light chat.

When I'm happy my mind isn't blank. My mind is blank when I have dissociated or I'm depressed or zoned out from exhaustion.

I know you said you don't want it to be about your diagnosis, but you did bring it up, and that does affect how we feel about conversations and perceive things.

Laying aside any diagnosis, how conversations make us feel depends on a variety of things and those things can change. It can be affected by topic, energy of the conversation, the amount of energy you have, your emotional state, your interests, the expectations of yourself and the others involved in the conversation, and your purpose in being part of the conversation, whether or not you really want to talk. There are some people who just don't like conversation unless it is something they want to talk about and with a particular person or type of person.

lf you are in a conversation that you don't want to be having, regardless of the type or style of conversation, that can feel heavy or burdensome.

It can be helpful to politely inform people that you don't like chit chat. You can tell people anything that you feel is important to know about how to communicate with you and your boundaries.

I tell people that I am not a chatty person, and that silence is not awkward to me. I also tell them upfront that I am not the BFF type because I don't want people trying to latch on to friendships with me too quickly.

This lets them know what they can expect from you so that there is no misunderstanding or disappointment later. It can reduce hurt feelings. Most reasonable people receive it respectfully, even if they don't like it. The people who are offended by your honesty or take it personally, are not people who are good for you to engage with, or you with them. Part ways peacefully.

No, I mean when I talk deep, I am full of emotion, but when I talk light it feels jarring, like a shot of caffeine..

Similar, if I've had a lot of sleep I feel tired, But if I've had very little sleep I feel wide awake..
It's not really an illness thing, I'm equating it to the way they mis-ascribe mania, verses depression

More people other than me without illness, I saw a reel that depict it perfectly

What I am saying is that I think people have miscategorized highs, verses lows feelings,

Really bubbly feelings feels like a shot of caffeine, Which to me is not light hearted
I talk to my Doctor every month, i'm just trying to relate this already natural phenomenon of lighthearted chat feeling like a jolt of energy, which does not feel light!

Like, light hearted chat feels like a heart attack, it feels like a cheerleader with tons of pep, and energy and the cheerleader type will never again feel lightweight to me, no matter how much the cheerleader weighs Lol
Whereas, Deep talk feels like a Sloth..

It's a natural phenomenon that i'm sure millions of people feel, and I found a reel that naturally depicts it
I'm just trying to relate that to my situation, as well ❤️‍

It's strange but I think I understand what you're saying. I've had my own bouts with depression over the years, especially when I was young.

Yep. It's not easy to depict.

Years ago my wife and I took the Meyers Briggs tests as part of a marriage " encounter" retreat. I've since taken it again.
Im extremely introverted. My wife is extremely extroverted. Both of which are very common, but in different degrees, and varied combinations.
The OP sounds similar to me. An extreme introvert.
An example that may illustrate the issue at hand:

If my wife and I ( much to my chagrin ) are invited to an event with more than a handful of close friends, I come home exhausted. My wife returns home like an energizer bunny.
We're both at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Just knowing this truth about myself was liberating.
