  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think I must have missed the "bear" story. Could you share it again if you have time?
I walked outside this morning full faced into a very sticky spider web. Ugh. God bless the spiders, but please spare me their webs. :prayer:
Happy Saturday!

Claire I probably shared it on another thread. No biggy except this is the first time I have seen a bear in my yard at this house. Everywhere else I lived here in North Vancouver I have see bears but had lived here since 92 and seen none although others had.
I was at the computer which is beside sliding glass doors to my backyard when Ilooked to the left of me and saw a big shaggy black "dog" I was confused as Ihave a fenced in yard. I looked a bit closer to see if someone had left the gate open and then realized it wan't a dog. lol. ANyway Iwatched for about 5 minutes as he attempted to figure out a way out. He did, probably by the same way he got in, up our small stone 'fences" and over the treed berm that shelters us from the main road.. I live beside a creek and I figure he was must have been heading down there and accidently turned into our yard. I was glad my dogs were inside as I am sure at least one of them would have charged it. Hard to say though. Jan

Wow! That would get the heart to beating!!!! Better than coffee! ha!
We have a few bears around here where I live but I have never seen one. I would really like to see one (from the safety of my house of course!). I have seen a few deer (so beautiful!) lots of coyotes, black crows the size of kitties, mountain lions and bob cats. I have seen a few snakes and about 6 weeks ago a little one somehow got into our house! That was not fun!!! But we survived, however he didn't! I called some local men to my rescue! Including my son-in-law who lives down the Creek Road from us. I hope I NEVER repeat that experience!!!

The Four Blessed Looks:

Look back
and thank God.
Look forward
and trust God.
Look around
and serve God.
Look within
and find God.

~

I asked God,
'How do I get the best out of life?'

God said,
"Face your past without regrets"
"Handle your present with confidence"
"And prepare for the future without fear"

~

Without God, our week is:

Mournday,
Tearsday,
Wasteday,
Thirstday,
Fightday,
Shatterday
and Sinday.

So, allow Him
to be with you every day!

~

Life is short,
so
Forgive quickly.
Believe slowly.
Love truly.
Laugh uncontrollably.
Never regret
anything
that makes you happy.

That was awesome, Dave. Thanks for posting that on an otherwise humdrum Mournday. :)

MommySue, there was a rattlesnake in our house once that was coiled behind a door. The kids noticed a little mouse that appeared to be dying and they were bent down to inspect it when I saw the snake. Apparently the snake had just bitten the mouse (hence, the dying part) and was coiled to strike AT MY KIDS!! Fortunately, my brother was visiting and he grabbed my brand new very expensive kitchen knife and chopped the snakes head off. That knife was worth it's weight in gold! Come to find out, the house we were renting at the time was built a few hundred yards from some huge old tree that housed a rattlesnake den underneath it.
We moved. Oh yea. Quickly.

Jan, thanks for sharing again about the bear. I have a healthy respect for outdoor critters.

Oh my!!!! I'm so glad your brother was there! He must be one brave guy! I don't know if I could have gotten that close to a snake but I guess if it was to save my kids (grandkids) or my neices/nephews, I could do it! I didn't know that snakes lived in a den!!!!! Yikes!

The story we were told by some area rattlesnake hunters was that when they built houses in that area, the old tree was uprooted and there were literally thousands of snakes in a 'den'. But it doesn't really matter I guess. More than one snake is equal to a thousand as far as I'm concerned. :)
The rattlesnake hunters told us to sleep with a rope on the floor circling our beds, that snakes would not cross over rope. It sounded a little far fetched to me. (But we did just that until we could move!)

Hello all!

My family and I have been in the mountains of New Mexico for the last few days. We were in the Mora River area in the Pecos Wilderness, right at the junction of the Mora and Bear Creek. This is rough country, rugged and beautiful. The trails are not maintained--they're actually not man-made at all in many places, just animal trails that we followed into the wilderness. Often we just barely made it through the brush. Sometimes the only way was across the river and back, in icy almost knee-deep water. Sometimes we were hanging onto a rock wall, carefully choosing our footing. Not easy with a full 30-50 pound backpack!

We saw mule deer, a brown bear (a cute little fellow, not very big, but it was amazing to see him run up a steep hill), opposums, chipmunks and lots of squirrels. We did NOT see any snakes (although I was looking for them, and we were all in long pants, just in case). We caught wild brown trout. My 14-year-old son caught a trout that was 11 1/2 inches long!

The best memory came one afternoon on a fishing excursion up Bear Creek. We had just finished lunch when we lay back on the ground and watched the quaking aspen leaves rustle in the wind 60 feet above us. It was so lovely.

How good God is!

Hi Claire....
Thank you for the link
www.unitedwildlife.com/AnimalsSnakes.html

I wouldnt, put too much store/stock/faith in this site
The author/authoress has a problem
with spelling and grammar ;)

'rattlesnake' & 'her'
being just a couple of the problematicals she/he has

LOL

Yes, I can, confirm
that snakes do not 'apparently' pass over sisal-type ropes
but, that-said, I myself, would be loathe
to-rely on 'that' being my only protection

Some snakes, can spit venom that can blind
its 'victim' or an aggressor
most modern homes can keep snakes out
of, our living-spaces
UNLESS they have a 'welcoming' open-door or window

rattlesnakes have 'rattles' at the tip of their tails
LOL and not "snaketles" much LOL
:D

Hmm, snake dens or snake nests?

I've heard the term "den of snakes," aka, "den of thieves." But Google provides no links to "snake dens," just "snake nests". So once more, I believe our alert Dave is correct.

I'm glad that I have no intimate knowledge of snakes. Well, there have been a couple of experiences, now that I recall. Here is one which changed me:

We were living on the edge of Albuquerque, and I was a young mother out walking in the nearby mesa with my two-year-old and a newborn in a tummy pouch. There was an archeological dig nearby, and I was interested to see what the many workers were finding. I wouldn't get too near, but I was amazed at their alacrity. I continued on, walking now on the edge of a canyon that dropped into what had been a river bed. As I continued, I passed an older man talking to a younger worker. He stopped me and began scolding me. "You're out here wearing shorts," he said, "aren't you aware that there are snakes out here?" Then he pointed out a rattler coiled near me--and my little guys--just six feet or so away. I would have passed right by it.

I never wear shorts out in the wild anymore. I haven't bought the boots he counseled me to get, but I'm much more careful to look at where I'm going.

Snake dens or nests, it only takes one...

What, no news, no simple chit chat since I posted last?

Well here's a tidbit. We've found a gem of a church. Our pastor is encouraging us to pray for the sick, and to believe God for miracles. It is awesome.

On to chit chat...I just realized that there are only two more weeks to get my kiddos ready for school. I need to get them in to see the doctor for their yearly physicals. Their teeth need checking and cleaning. At least I already took care of their immunizations. Who knows what they need in the way of school supplies. Sometimes they throw you doozies, like "Hey Mom, I need a super duper extra glitzy technical gizmo for my math class this year which can graph various functions and buzz Dairy Queen for a blizzard....."

Okay, I exaggerate at that buzzing for a blizzard part.

So I'm sitting here drinking coffee and contemplating the day...

It is 9:54AM and all is well here. It has been quite warm the past few days, but turned coolish over night..down to 13c overnight.

I am so busy doing nothing these days, hardly had time to sign in. Ever find that? The less one does, the more time is consumed.

I am digging a hole for a new post box at side of road. It is a total gravel dig. The road was widened and some of the road gravel ended up just where the post box is to go. It must be exactly 42 inches from ground to bottom of the box, so digging must be bang on.......in gravel, I say, in gravel.

I also priced a special attachment for my garden tractor. It is a combination grader blade and cultivator. I can use it to level my laneway and also work the garden. The price in Illinois is $179.00, but the shipping costs to Canada is $200.00. Is there some thought of gouging?

Cheers,

Jim

Out in west Texas when I was kid they would have rattlesnake drives. The rattlers would come to the west edge of Big Springs TX and aggravate the dogs and kids so every one is that area would beat the brush with pans and anything that made noise and drive them to a gulch about 20 yrds outside of town. The men would shot into the gulch and then the adventuresome younger guys would go down with gunnysacks and "harvest" the snakes. The only problem was that all the snakes weren't dead. Makes it fun :)

Later we had rattlesnake steaks and chocolate coated fire ants made by the Indians.

Hey Jim--that's exactly what I'm looking for my garden tractor. What's the addy? My RV keeps scraping over the water bumps on the gravel road and I'm concerned about under carriage damage.
