Mary and I got a call from 'Servacare' earlier today
They are the carers that call on Joyce [around the corner from us @150yards]
Apparently, the carer was getting no-response from Joyce
and Mary, being her registered 'Key-Keeper', was being contacted to let her in
I took the key around, but found the doors were unlocked and walked straight in
At first glance it appeared that she had passed-away, she looked so grey
but Joyce was asleep in her armchair, with the Television at full-volume
The carer, woke Joyce and phoned her office to say she had gotten inside
I returned home, and in my mind thinking how gormless these carers are
as it isn't the first time we have been called-out, to give them access
only to find the doors were not locked anyway
But, this is not the full story
Just 45 minutes ago, Joyce phoned us, screaming hysterically and begging us for 'something'
The television was still at full volume [in the background] and though we listened intently
we could not work out what it was she wanted so-desperately
so, I determined to go around there again
Just then there was a knock at the front door ~it was 'Kath' from across the road from us
and two of her daughters
They had heard Joyce 'screaming in the street' and this had worried them
I took the car around there, as I had struggled with my return from there earlier
~it being a long incline back to our home
I found Joyce sat on her bed in the living room "I've lost my keys Dave and cannot 'lock-up' "
I searched her front room and then continued looking in the kitchen
I found the back door wide-open as was the washing-machine door
and beneath the clothing, I saw a key sticking out
I found her keys, still pinned to her cardigan which was about to be washed
I locked the back door, and passed her her keys which she then pinned to her blouse
I offered to lock her in as I left, but she said "no, I will do it later"
and then I came away having heard her offer, to pay me, for my inconvenience
I told her that I don't seek payment for 'caring'
When I got back home, Kath and her daughters were still chatting with Mary at our gate
I revealed what I had 'found' around at Joyce's and their concensus
was that Joyce has gotten much more forgetful in recent times and become extremely vulnerable
As many as three to five phone calls to our house [out of every ten]
can be Joyce calling for something or other and this exposes the likelihood
that she may shortly be deprived of her independence and be taken into care
She is ninety-something years of age
