Stopping in for just a sec ~ it looks to be a busy week.
The polyurethaning is finished; tomorrow we will paint.
Have a blessed week everyone

Wildlife Alert :D

A MOOSE came through the property this morning; came up fast up from the lake which is opening up, went cross the neighbor's lawn
and then crossed the road over to our side property, and disappeared into the forest.
We had been smelling him recently; they smell like horses and hay

The Toms (wild turkeys) were also gobbling up a storm back there; courting their hens no doubt ;)

They are huge animals and cover a lot of ground very quickly; plus he was aware of Penny barking at him

We just have a basic (cheap) camera now, with a minimal zoom; unless they come close it will be a shoot and pray moment ;)

Thanks for your prayers

*ETA: we are keeping our eyes peeled....Penny went bullistic just now, and we both detected the smell of moose; so it is still in the area

**I forgot ~ thanks for the prayers; things should continue to go well with the painting, but it has been rough on me at times

Hello everyone. I should be back on a more regular schedule now. It was great getting to visit with my brother. He lives in Colorado.

UM? Now why did they call male turkeys "Toms"? :D

Gail, it really sounds nice to get to see wildlife that close to your property.

I can't imagine looking out the front window and seeing a moose or other wild animals galloping across the road, Gail. Wow! You are blessed to have those close-ups. I have no idea if they wreak havoc for you folk living there, though...?

There was a thread ages ago over in BE where the OP wanted us to answer the question: Why? I wrote a little poem for that. Here it is.....;)

WHY
'Why?' he asked, with a very worried face
'Is there a moose standing still outside my place?
I don't recall saying 'Come on down!' '
As he examined its antlers with a frown.
'How?' he asked, 'will I get to the store?
I'm out of bread and I need some more.'
'When?' he asked, 'will this moose deign to go?
I'm sure it will see me as the greatest of foes!
I daren't set foot outside my door
He'll charge and send me skidding on all fours!'
The day wore on and then the moose turned.
'Why?' he said, 'are my forests all burned?
Your home is solid and protects you well.
Half my home has a sign saying SELL.'
The man shook his head, 'Did I hear that aright?
'That moose was speaking' and then, in the light
Of dusk settling in, the moose leapt away
And the man stepped onto the lawn to survey
The half-stripped mountains towering so clear
And asked himself why suffering felt so near.

ROFLOL Tom ;) ^_^

I googled that ~ good question
How did the male turkeys become known as toms?
Answer:Benjamin Franklin named it after Thomas Jefferson when he would not allow it to be the national bird.
I never knew that fact :sorry:

Hi Joy
Nice poem...very true!
Thankfully we still have a lot of forest, but the wild life have been impacted by building in neighboring areas; one reason why we see MORE of them actually!

We do have 'wildlife crossing' signs on our roads where the deer/moose are most populated, and tend to cross into breeding grounds.
They can wreck havoc on the highways, causing many fatal car crashes each year.

As long as you don't approach them when they wander close to home, we are fine.
They can get aggressive during their rutting season, so we are also careful when hiking the woods in the Fall.
I did encounter a Buck in rut one time when I was alone; his stomps and snorts sent chills up my spine as I high tailed for cover :p

The black bears do more damage to property if trash/garbage/bird feed are available.
We also must be sure the house is secure in the summer because they will break in if they smell food and no one is around.
One neighbor had chickens killed in their garage, and another had their kitchen torn apart by a bear that entered through a screen door.

I have a healthy respect for them, believe me :D

Today I will be taping the wood trim as hubby starts the wall/ceiling paint.
It will be warming to @ 70 so we will be able to open up the house :)

Have a lovely day ~ God bless

Spring has sprung here

I looked out my window after posting about the moose and spotted PORKY (porcupine) :D
Usually he comes around after dark, and we must shoo him away so Penny doesn't get hurt.... so this was a nice surprise
Now to get to WORK on our paint project :p :sorry:

I miss my Minolta SLR , and getting out in nature like I used to :(
But I cherish all my past experiences, as well as these close encounters, and keep them in my heart

Yes, the disorder and mess is stressful...add to that the physical toll of fumes and work.

This time I must admit I stressed myself out before we even got started :blush:and that flares my thyroid/adrenal issues, making me feel ill and fatigued. :o

The crazy part is how stressed I became trying hard NOT to be stressed

I could kick my butt when I am my own worse enemy :sorry:

Lord, have mercy ~ live and learn

Back to work  If nature will let me #871 (I get distracted ;) )

*ETA: work for the day is done...and so am I :p :swoon:
No other wildlife sightings so far today ;)
The lake will be open by tomorrow most likely

Hello Everyone,

It sounds like folks are busy this week. Just hearing about all that work makes me tired. ;)

Sister Gail, thanks for the information on Tom turkeys - I always wondered about that.

SMILE - thankfully it's contagious. Everyone have a great week.

Thanks Dave :)
Penny JUST missed meeting it tonight; I didn't see it in the yard, hooked her to the runner and off she went, just as I spotted it
There I was yelling at her to stop...thank God she did! but I about died :swoon:
From now on we will just put her on a leash, considering our close encounters with the skunks last year too

Good morning everyone. I guess most of you are still fast asleep in bed. Goodness me, Gail, you do have an interesting life at your house. All that wildlife in your grounds! The only kind of wildlife we have here would be foxes, badgers and squirrels and we only get fleeting glimpses of those. Today is my son's 28th birthday. The 4 of us here will celebrate with cake and apple drink and the other 2 members of our family will join us on Friday or Saturday for a meal out somewhere. This afternoon I have to do taxi service to take our youngest for a haircut and also to the supermarket to get some snacks. I might get some things as well. Other than that it will just be housework on the agenda today. Blessings to all, Gillian

Today was a busy but good day for us (mine sounded like yours Gillian) ;)
Hubby finished the first coat 1 on the ceilings ;)
I went to get a great hair cut by a wonderful (new) gal
After I went food shopping, put out the trash, and then we treated ourselves to a yummy dinner out.

Looks like a quiet day on GE; hope everyone is well

God bless
