A Tribute to Autumn
As we bid "good bye" to Summer, let us welcome it's predecessor, Autumn. Autumn, otherwise known as "Fall" is a season festooned with myriad's of color and Mother Nature's merry little breezes turning from hot to a caressing warm-to-cool.
Soon, the trees will be changing their leaves of green to those of yellow, gold, red, and orange. An occasional rust hue will sometimes be observed as well. In areas where Evergreens reside, the contrast is quite beautiful, you will see the colors strategically placed with the green, it can be breathtaking indeed when the background is a large mountain or a mirrored lake. Yes, the Lord is truly the "Artist" as no one can even come close to creating scenes such as these.
The New England States win the grand prize for Fall Foliage colors, and next, are some of the Southern states such as Kentucky and Virginia. White Church Steeples against the backdrop of reds, oranges and yellow are truly a picture-postcard. The narrow country lanes, in which trees form a canopy, touching each other from one side to the other is like an outdoor cathedral, one can not help but feel the presence of our Lord when strolling amongst such an idyllic setting.
When the leaves start to fall, many people will collect them to make various crafts or press into scrap books as mementos. Let's not forget, however, the job at hand, which is RAKING!! Oh my, for many days, folks make many little "hills" only to have the excited children jump right in the middle of them, "SWOOSH!! This creates a type of "spray" as leaves go scurrying every where, sometimes, Rover joins in the fun as well. Oh well, back to square one, "and this time, you guys, you are gonna help, ya hear." HeHe. But, dad never stays angry to long, and before you know it, bags are filled and the task is finished for another year.
Taking walks during this time of year is a peaceful experience. I love to watch the squirrels as they scamper about collecting their nuts for the winter, why, some have so many in their little jaws, they look like they will pop. Many critters will use the leaves for making snug little dens and nests. My favorite part of walking is watching the leaves gently fall to the ground or kicking the leaves as I go, I enjoy watching them float into the air and land again.
Scarecrows, pumpkins, corn-a-copias, turkeys, corn husks, are but a few of the many decorations that, if people decorate for the season, will use. As the rays of sun slant through the windows, the warm colors cast a cozy light to rooms in which these items are used.
The highlight of the Autumn Season is the wonderful holiday of "Thanksgiving." All week, proceeding this scrumptious day, aromas of freshly baked goodies can be smelled as one enters the kitchen after being outside all day doing a hard days labor. Thanksgiving day itself brings the delicious smell of the turkey along with muffins, candied yams, peas and various other tasty viands. After a wonderful meal, all head for the living room to watch a little foot ball, although, I suspect, that most end up taking a snooze instead. Then, it is back to the kitchen for "just one more" piece of that delicious pumpkin or apple pie.
Autumn, what a wonderful time of year the Lord has given us. Let us all be thankful and rejoice in His works.
