I'm not for mayors doing that either.

But, you know, they're probably acting in the same PR-like way as Cathy arguably was: looking to their own bases in the hopes of support for their actions, so that (with mayors) they would become more popular politically (and win more future votes), or that (with Cathy) he would become more popular business-wise (and win more patrons).

Why shouldn't liberals and supporters of gay rights boycott a company that says in private or public that they are the summoning gods wrath?

Boycotts are the American Way of expressing displeasure with a corporation. I support anyone's right to organize boycotts.

But I am NOT in favor of mayors (or any government entity) trying to curb a business from operating just because they don't like that corporations stance on a social issue.

But... But... What about representative government? What about the will of the people in that city? Should their wishes not be followed?

This seems nearly identical to when the right tried to prevent that Mosque in New York from being built. Hypocrisy abounds on both sides.

The "But...But..." at the beginning of Ben's post indicates that he is sarcastically adopting a "liberal" version of a conservative position he disagrees with, in this case the idea that it is not only permissible, but praiseworthy to use the politics of majority rule to disenfranchise a minority population from established human rights.

I'm glad to see his approach worked in so far as you now realize that that kind of position is immoral. Now go and tell your fellow-travelers who supported just that in California during the Prop 8 debacle.

Actually it has to do with the Constitutionality of the issue. Deciding a business has no place in a community (see Walmarts being denied for example) and infringing on the civil rights of a portion of the population are two different matters. One can be legal, the other not.

I don't like Dan Cathy's comments, and I won't be boycotting CFA (which would be a pointless endeavor anyway, as I don't think that I have ever been within 100 miles of a CFA restaurant), but I support the right of those who will as well as Mr. Cathy's right to express his opinion. A boycott is an expression of one's right to free speech. To keep a business out of your town because of the opinions of its CEO is an inhibition to free speech. And, I care a heck of lot more about basic constitutional liberties like free speech than about arguable issues such as marriage equality (or protecting traditional marriage if that is your preferred term).

I am not aware of Walmart ever being denied access to a community solely because of the personal opinions or statements of its CEO. Typically, when they are excluded from a community, it is because of the nature of their business and its potential impact on safety within the community. The threats made by the City of Chicago against CFA are a direct assault on Dan Cathy's First Amendment rights.

Personally, I am all for same sex marriage, but I cannot understand the backlash against Cathy. He expressed an opinion, in the most PC terms possible, that anyone with half a brain already knew was his position on the issue. I don't see what the uproar is all about.

Another business that I have never patronized because Lowe's is closer to my home. But, for most things I still prefer the locally owned hardware store (but I wonder how long those will continue to exist )

We have one in our town, and it sure is convenient. I think of all the times that I have had to go there for basic hardware items (nuts, bolts, hoses, and the like) and how I didn't have to trudge through 9 aisles of toilets just to find them, and I am glad that they continue to exist.

But, still the point remains, isn't it pretty darn intolerant and hateful to boycott the Home Depot based on their position towards gay rights? Stop the H8, right?!?
